That’s a big wels, actually a huge one for the UK. But continental specimens can grow much bigger, especially in southern Europe where they were introduced in several countries like parts of Italy, Spain, Greece and France.

This particular specimen is yet interesting, as it’s by far the largest one known from the UK. The climate there is not very good for the growth of Silurus glanis, as they grow best in comparably warm water.

Believe it or not, it’s not all that uncommon to catch Wels Catfish of that size. They get huge. That’s a very nice fish, but I’ve seen some much bigger.
