The Van Meter Visitor: A True and Mysterious Encounter with the Unknown

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on September 24th, 2015

For several nights in 1903, the small town of Van Meter, Iowa was terrorized by a giant bat-like creature that emerged from an old abandoned mine. The identity of this mysterious visitor was never discovered. Over 100 years later, three researchers set out to Van Meter to shine a light on this amazingly bizarre case. Filled with eye witness reports, historic photos, and current accounts of the paranormal, this in-depth book looks to discover what really happened in the town of Van Meter.

Van Meter Visitor Festival

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on September 23rd, 2015

The 112th Anniversary of the Bewildering Week in 1903 celebrated this Saturday, September 26th.

It was a classic rural community that had been carved out of rolling hills covered in thick woods, wheat fields and a winding river when someone first saw something that didn’t belong. The sightings swiftly spiraled from unusual lights acting in unexplained ways, to that of immense 8′ tall creatures with massive bat-like wings. As the nightly encounters of The Van Meter Visitor continued, the creature grew bolder, drawing closer to witnesses revealing more details to the mystery as described with a large single horn jutting out from atop its head, able to emanate blinding light and a strange smell that disoriented witnesses. All the more terrifying…the monster seemed to remain impervious to bullets.

A Manifestation of Monsters is Here!

Posted by: Karl Shuker on September 13th, 2015

I’m delighted to announce that my latest book, A Manifestation of Monsters: Examining the (Un)Usual Subjects, is now in print, published by Anomalist Books. It contains a superb foreword by my good friend and fellow cryptozoologist Ken Gerhard, and its front cover is sumptuously illustrated with a truly spectacular cryptozoological painting by hugely-talented artist Michael J. Smith that directly inspired me to write this book.

Monsters No Longer Have Cooties!

Posted by: Chalupacabra on November 7th, 2014

They’re in, they’re hip, and suddenly (after thousands of years) they rule pop culture. Up until recently, telling someone you were into monsters and cryptozoology was not a shortcut to popularity. But things are changing. Monsters are taking over TV, starring in more movies, as well as appearing on beer labels and hipster T-shirts. And since monsters are now cool, that means the people who look for them are cool, too. Right?

American Monsters Uncaged

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on August 28th, 2014

The Monsters have been uncaged! The whole furry, scaly, red-eyed, bat-winged, fanged, dripping-clawed, oversized pack of slavering unknown creatures that I spent two years cramming into a 376-page paperback are now free to romp and roam where ever anyone may care to read about them. And in this book, it’s not just all about upright, wolf-like creatures.
