In fact, central american jungles have cougars, racoons, peccari wild boars, deer, roadrunners...

Fossil records show also...mastodons and elephants (Gomphoterium). In a foto from National Geographic, a purported prehistorical "bear skull" was also shown lying in a cave.
Greetings.

Yes, according to the Smithsonian Book of Mammals (1999) the range of those little bandits extends all the way down to the Panama Canal.

See <a title="map" href="http://www.discoverlife.org/nh/tx/Vertebrata/Mammalia/Procyonidae/Procyon/lotor/images/Procyon_lotor_map.mx.jpg" rel="nofollow">map</a>.

http://zipcodezoo.com/Animals/P/Procyon_lotor_shufeldti.asp

I never thought of racoons as an indigenous species of Mexico (thought the only "mapaches" around here were the corrupt politicians that steal voting urns!). It's nice to learn something new :-)
