Further to which in this sentence: ‘I believe skeptics’ main, and very fair, issue, is the ratio of “junk” to “science” in cryptozoology.’

By simple substitution the word “cryptozoology” can be replaced with anything else — such as UFO, aliens, climate change, dark energy. It seems to be a very generic “skeptics” dismissal.

So, the degree of skepticism that skeptics face in their broadscale dismissive attempts is really not surprising.

Mnynames, the useful, scientific result was accidental. I don’t believe credit can be extended when there was no intent. If I get into a drunken bar fight and knock someone out, the police arrive, and discover that the injured party is in fact a wanted murderer, that doesn’t give drunken bar fights any additional respectability.

You see, now this is a perfect example of how a subject damned by science (To quote Charles Fort) can produce useful, scientific results. The skeptics that keep harping on about cryptozoology as junk science clearly fail to appreciate that in science, even a negative result can have positive and meaningful benefits to science itself, and add one more verifiable truth to our ever-expanding circle of knowledge.
