Do the people who originally lived in that area have any stories that might corroborate it? If a population survived, they’d surely know.

sschaper, I looked it up in Wikipedia. It says they become extinct roughly 10,000 years ago.

It is sad that people think they can just let go of their responsibility when it comes to their exotic pets. I’m not saying that this was someones pet once, and I am not saying it isn’t. The prospect of it being an American lion is intrigiuing. How often do reports of lions or other out-of-place large cats occur that go uninvestigated by the local animal welfare?

Though I’m probably hoping against hope, that really would be a kick if this beast was captured and turned out to be “Panthera atrox”. That being said, if I remember correctly from reading one of your books, Loren, the maned cats that have been seen in North America have been black; I’m guessing this one was tawny.
