1) Put the bones of the "Mutant" into a box.
2) Give them to the lady whether it was her dog or not.
3) Present the latest YouTube Sasquatch hoax.

Everybody wins!

ahh, yes...once again we can take photos of an almost completely whole corpse and get them published but...does no one ever think of collecting the damn things and trying to preserve them as much as possible?

I remember the Louisiana Roadkill photos that went around the 'net not too long ago and thought the same thing. All you have is photos of the corpse(?) lying roadside and a bunch of people (apparently) poking it with a stick and asking aloud 'what the hell is 'at?'. By the time the 'hard core' investigators get there there isn't much left but some hair and bones...

I can imagine a local news piece done on this and the anchor saying something dismissive like 'Looks like somebody let Fluffy out to pee and he never made it back...(fake chuckle, giggle, giggle)'.

This is your answer to why DNA was necessary to determine the gender:

By the time Mark and I received permission to enter the property and be taken to the body (a mere 40 hours after the body's discovery), the carcass had been mostly stripped by turkey vultures and other "varmints" (to use a local term) eating the dead animal.

The property owner also had taken the skull and would not share it. (There were rumors of posting it on eBay.) Only the paws were still whole and covered with fur. Nevertheless, the individuals who had found and photographed it said it was a male. Mark's newspaper sent out two DNA samples to two labs, to determine what kind of animal it was.

As Mark emails here, the finding on gender merely confirmed what we were already told my the people that saw the animal when it was intact.

Let me be clear, I do not think this transported Florida dog was the same as the one found in Maine.

The biologists who did the DNA tests mentioned parenthetically that the chow was a male. I don't think that was a focus of the testing.

I thought maybe Miss Madden may have been mistaken about the gender of her dog. Scientific proof came forth, however, when she reported Woolfie squatted when she peed.

Why was DNA needed to determine the Gender? Was the male organs so damaged that the sex of the animal was not distinguishable?
