Also shooting “files” at sea monsters is totally deadly to them, I thought this was a well known fact.

Getting a camera and shooting a video of a sea serpent in 1907 would have been more amazing than seeing the serpent itself!

Is there a typo there where the article reports that they were going to get a shot at it with a ‘file’? Could that have been intended to read “rifle”? That would make sense. While there’s nothing new under the sun, we are currently living in the first time in history, at least since the widespread distribution of modern firearms, that our first reaction to seeing a sea-serpent wouldn’t be to shoot it.
The coast of California especially, by virtue of its geography and ocean currents, acts to create a huge upwelling of very deep, cold and oxygen rich water, and that upwelling moves relative to the coast with the seasons. This report indicates that locals were used to seeing it twice a year, much like the migrating gray whales which are visible from the shore twice a year.
