When I was talking to Bob Gimlin a while back that I mentioned that Willow Creek should make you mayor or roll out the red carpet when you come to town. They should give him a big thank you. When I contacted tourism for willow creek they were very forthcoming and sent me a load of bigfoot stuff. The merchants and citizens are passing up a real opportunity if they don't sell bigfoot.

I visited Willow Creek three or four summers ago during a "regular" period of time -- not Bigfoot Daze.

I'd made a reservation at the Bigfoot Motel several weeks ahead of time from New York, and when I was checking in I asked what time the Willow Creek/China Flat Museum opened in the morning. The clerk sighed a not-too-friendly, "Oh, you're one of THOSE."

The next morning my girlfriend* and I were the only patrons at the museum. The diner had foot-shaped pancakes or something similar. And that's about it for Willow Creek "selling" Bigfoot. The town must be saving its energy for all the other lucrative selling points it has to offer.

But we drove up through Happy Camp on a perfect day, saw a bald eagle in flight, and cherish the memory anyway.

Jim
NYC

* Amazingly, despite my having taken her to Willow Creek and the BF Motel, she not only remained my girlfriend but married me. I did not risk trying to give our daughter a crypto-themed name.

It might be an obvious question, but I've always wondered how much influence fictional cryptozoology stories have had on all this. In so many of them, the monster (or ghost, or whatever) is either a hoax used to scare people away from a place, or a hoax used to ATTRACT them. In the case of the former thing, you see it in countless Scooby Doo episodes, and countless other stories, but you see the "tourist attraction" idea a lot too. (And of course, it HAS happened some of the time, as with the famous "Silver Lake Monster," but I'm referring to actual literature and movies and so on.) Can debunkers be influenced by these stories (which of course probably aren't really meant to influence anyone that way)?

The thought that anyone makes a fortune off crypto monsters is a pretty silly notion. As for Father's Day, I hope all fathers in this group and you, Loren, have a wonderful day. I met one of your sons at a conference in Seattle and you have every right to be proud.

I'm a father, so thank you for that. I gave my 9 month old daughter a Bigfoot figurine as a present and she tried to eat it. Wonder if that is any sort of sign of an interest in cryptozoology or not? :)
