I agree with Judy Green. A great post Loren about a murderer who tried to kill bigfoot.

Gotta agree with Ceroill, sounds more like a spin on the old Windigo stories, only less cannibalism.

If anything this seems to lend less credibility to bigfoot witnesses. Just another crazy added to the list.

The human mind is a landscape we all recognize but can barely understand; and the disturbed mind interprets that landscape in a way different than those of us for whom the features that comprise our commonly shared world are recognized for what they are.

Were it not bigfoot, this disturbed mind, whether as a result of infantile fever or a tumor or some trauma, would probably have latched onto some other feature of the world and misinterpreted it in an effort to integrate the deep interior fear and conflicts with what is supposed to be there.

Of course, in our so called enlightened civilization we still look to punishment, an eye for an eye, and revenge when the mentally ill murder, steal, cheat and exhibit serious anti-social behavior in hopes, we tell ourselves, that it will deter others. As long as evil is interpreted as willfully turning away from some divine order, we will fail to look closely enough to understand the nature of anitsocial behavior and continue to address it in the same old, unproductive, but perversely reassuring way.

Ok, so he saw a big foot. Apparently that was a long time ago. For being a young person when he saw it, the descriptions and advice (at camp) seems perfectly normal. If I had seen one as a child, I'm sure I would have been torn between getting out there and finding it again, or to stay away and find a normalistic safety net. In order to do what he did in 1999, there had to be some insanity. One psychologist said that insanity is simply the loss of knowing where the boundaries are, or that there are any.

I think it's much more likely that Carey Staynor's "madness" had something to do with his older brother Steven's abduction, abuse, and subsequent return after seven years. Something like that is bound to have a profound effect on the whole family, but especially on siblings.

Maybe Carey Staynor DID see a Bigfoot. Who am I to say? But in this case I think more probably, his "Bigfoot" was a projection of his own disturbed mind, sort of like "the voices told me to do it".

Lots of people have reported seeing such a creature and done little more than calm their nerves with a stiff drink.

Whew! Creepy stuff. I was living in Sacramento at the time of those murders so, of course, the newspapers were overflowing with stories about them. So sad for the parents after what happened to their other son. I was also living in Sacramento when the Zodiac murders occurred, but, of course, they have no connection to Bigfoot as far as I know.
