“A Species Odyssey”

The Johor Hominid photos are the plates from the volume L’Odyssee de l’espece, which is the companion book that accompanies the TV documentary “L’Odyssee de l’espece,” first released in French in 2001.

Quite amazingly, by coincidence, the English-language version of this series - “A Species Odyssey” - is being broadcast all week on cable, via the Discovery Science cable network. For broadcast times in North America, click here.

    Great show by the way.

  2. bigsassy responds:

Yes I flipped by it last night and low and behold saw the JH. If I hadn’t seen the photo’s posted here I may well have thought I was seeing a real life Bigfoot poking another with a stick.

  3. mauka responds:

Is it on the Discovery network or is this a different channel?

  4. JRC responds:

I saw a behind the scenes special on the program when they first brought it to the US. The care that the makeup artists and the actors took was very remarkable. It took hours every day to transform the actors into these distant relatives of ours.

  5. BadState responds:

Watched it late last night, and it struck me as an interesting coincidence with the JH thing. I suppose they might just be capitalising on the free publicity.

  6. Scarfe responds:

Coincidence, my butt! This whole thing has been a prolonged conspiracy to advertise and promote this documentary!

    I kid of course.

  7. jjames1 responds:

BadState: I can assure you that the Discovery Channel plans their programming for all of their networks weeks (and sometimes months) in advance. It’s simply a coincidence that the show is airing now.

  8. Loren Coleman responds:

Those cable companies that have many channel selections often offer several Discovery channels, including Discovery Channel (the original), Discovery Kids, and Discovery Science. This program is being carried on the latter, and, of course, despite the jokes on here today, had to be planned as part of the programming months and months ago.

  9. BadState responds:

jjames1 and Loren. I know they schedule programming way ahead of time. It just seems like a freaky coincidence to me, and I was exploring possible explanations. Aside from Discovery being behind the hoax (highly unlikely), perhaps the hoaxers had seen an advertisement for the upcoming show, which inspired them to give those pics to Chow? Of course, it’s most likely a simple coincidence, but the paranoiac in me doesn’t like coincidences…

  10. jjames1 responds:

BadState: Again, it’s simple coincidence. Why would Malaysian guerillas see advertisements for the American re-broadcast of a 5-year old French documentary and THEN give Chow the pictures? Clearly, whoever gave Chow the photos was aware of the show’s existence for quite some time, given that A) the original show aired in 2001, and B) they had a book based on the documentary.

It’s coincidence, regardless of how paranoid you might be. :) This situation is already muddled enough without complicating it further.

  11. twblack responds:

It is still a shame for the whole thing over there.

  12. crypto_randz responds:

This whole entire saga or story was a disgrace to cryptozoology, just my personal feeling. All they did was waste everybody’s time. It would have been great if dr.chow’s pictures showed for the first time ever the existence for a living ape like human, but they didn’t. Pretty sad ending .

  13. Mnynames responds:

On the up-side, we’re all becoming pretty good hoax detectors though, aren’t we?

Bit of a tarnished chrome lining if you ask me, but still…

  14. civetcatman responds:

Wonder what else the said book will reveal. I’ve made own scrapbook and it’s quite thick.

Looking forward to all Bigfoot news wherever they may be.

A dream to see real evidence before I check out but the journey’s been great nonetheless.

  15. elfis responds:

It has been suggested elsewhere within cryptomundo comments that this could all be a hoax perpetrated by malaysian authorities as part of a stealth tourism campaign. A form of “guerrilla” marketing, pardon the pun.

I find that idea more and more compelling as the plot thickens on this story.

Viral, Stealth, Guerrilla marketing techniques are real and all around us.

I could easily see this being an orchestrated hoax by some marketing firm working with Malaysian tourism. I have a hard time believing a real scientist would knowingly go along with this but he could easily be an unwilling dupe.

Besides, wasn’t it Loren who said, “We all know now it was an elaborate hoax, with a society created, some guardians, and eventually a website supporting this misinformation.”

What society and guardians are we talking about here?

    SMiles

  16. Jeremy_Wells responds:

well Miles, the society would be the organization created by Chow and Ang I assume… at least a few of the “guardians” have also been identified in some of Loren’s previous posts on the subject (or at least some of the “patsies” have been identified, if one is conspiracy minded, with some shadowy “communist guerillas” apparently still remaining unidentified.)

  17. DWA responds:

    WAIT!

The Johor Hominid has been sighted? ON TV?

  18. DWA responds:

…and he accidentally (how does one do that?) hit “post” before he typed:

I KNEW IT! THE TRAIL IS HOT! ALERT BISCARDI! BEER AND PIZZA AT MY PLACE! WE’RE ON IT!

    sign me,

    Waiting for Patty
