Yeah, I was thinking bacterial infections from the bites and scratches as well. I can only speculate that the younger daughter survived due to the resilience of youth and a stronger immune system that successfully fought off the infections. Just my thoughts....

He may have succumbed after a long struggle with some nasty infection[s], not necessarily rabies.

I believe if that cat were rabid, there would be two funerals. One funeral for the father and one for the daughter, who also was bitten by the same cat.

Another thing that tells me that the cat was not rabid, is that it took over a year for the man to die. With the rabies virus, he would have succumbed at a much earlier date.

I may be missing something here, but are we to conclude that the cat was rabid - or just vicious?

I wonder if the "year of greatest suffering" was caused by the bobcat being rabid ? I can only imagine what a struggle with a Bobcat would be like.....ever play with a big housecat-----when they decide to play rough,it can get a little intense. Picture something bigger and thinking you are its' next meal.....Great story.
