10 tonnes? That's rather on the very low end of the scale, a giant like this probably weighted in btw 13 to as much as 16 tonnes. Proboscideans have had plenty of 10+ tonnes members within the Elephantidae and the Deinotheriidae. No one knows for certain, but 20-25 tonnes seems to be the outlier for terrestrial mammal size.

The estimate given above for this beast is about 10 tons, while Baluchitherium (a.k.a. Paraceratherium, or Indricotherium) has been estimated at 10 to 20 metric tons. It's probably safe to say that 20 is on the high side and the weight ranges of the two species overlapped, but it seems likely the "World's Heaviest Mammal" crown still goes to the outsized hornless rhinocerous.

If the size estimates for this beast are correct, then wouldnt it be the equal of the Baluchitherium?

FYI, read the fascinating book "JUMBO: The Greatest Elephant in the World" for a good account of human-elephant interaction. Jumbo was not the biggest African elephant on record, but the descriptions of his strength and ability to damage or destroy heavily reinforced enclosures when in the mood are downright scary.

Human ingenuity would definitely be called for in hunting this critter - surely people didn't just throw spears at it. They'd look for sites for natural pit traps, rockfalls, etc. Trying to use nets, as in the film 10,000 BC, would likely be a good way to get dragged or trampled to death.

Since gigantism exists in humans, shouldn't it exist in other mammals? Could that be the reason for the exceptional 5 meter specimen if the others are closer to 3.5 meters?

Why don't we hear of gigantism among other placentals?

Pre-horse American locals would drive bison over a cliff, as a much more effective way to get meat to preserve for the winter. Could it be that pre-historic peoples would have hunted other megafauna the same way?

GREAT SCOTT, MARTHA!! Lookit the SIZE of that animal!

It's one thing to imagine fanciful brontosaurs stretching their necks waaay up into the trees, and terrifying T-Rex galloping along after our Jeep, but when we double (or triple!) the size of the local zoo's friendly pachyderm in our mind's eye, now you're talkin' a serious creature!

Imagine going after one of those beasts with a Pleistocene-era spear - you'd have to be pretty hungry. Of course, they must have been slow moving, easy targets, but still...

Ahh, cool. Thanks for the new info. I would also imagine that the biggest mammoths, when taken as prey, would have held special significance, and earn the hunters great accolades from their people.
