Santa’s Family Tree ‘09

Above, Santa Claus in the wooded forest with holly, German postcard, circa 1900.

Santa as the Green Man. Or is it the Green Man as Santa? Ah, the mystery of the Green Hand revealed?

The ultimate in Wildpeople/Woodwoses genealogy was charted for your consideration last year.

In the end of 2008 issue of Fortean Times, Wildman chronicler and artist Jeffrey Vallance created a unique, intriguing, entertaining graphic, “Santa Claus Family Tree.”

I asked Jeffrey if he would allow me to share his intriguing chart online with the readers of Cryptomundo, and he did. I publish it again, for all who missed it and because it is the theme of a display just completed in the front window of the International Cryptozoology Museum. It is a new exhibition of “Santa as Wildman, Wildman as Santa.” Where one begins and the other ends is often difficult to tell.

Wildpeople, forever, I say!

Happy Yule Yetis.

Thank you!

The International Cryptozoology Museum is located at the back of The Green Hand Bookshop, both located at 661 Congress Street, Portland, Maine.

Ready to hang with a silver cord, you can now pick up your very own Sasquatch ornament, which is 4½”- 4¾” tall, brown with golden highlights and crafted of glass and resin, at the museum, while supplies last. The “Legend of the Bigfoot” card is included.

For those looking for a sharper white Yeti among your evergreen branches, here’s the white Abominable Snowman ornament. With a silver cord, our the 4½”- 4¾” white hairy hominoid ornament is crafted of glass and resin and accented with sparkling iridescent glitter accents, also with the “Legend of Bigfoot” card.

Both are great ways to support the International Cryptozoology Museum this holiday season.

LOL! My Dad’s sister married a Wildman. So, some of my family is on that tree, somewhere, probably on the Sasquatch branch.

  2. senque responds:

How does St. Nicholas, the Bishop of Smyrna, who punched the heresiarch Arius in the nose during the first ecumenical council in Nicea get placed as a descendant of water spirits? Way too much of a stretch. We know who the guy was and he wasn’t a water spirit or a wildman (in spite of the punching incident).

  3. odingirl responds:

Senque, this ‘family tree’ is obviously very tongue-in-cheek. It has no more to do with the actual origins or history of your St. Nicholas than this same St. Nicholas has to do with Santa Claus as we know him today. Many of the attributes of Mr. Claus are indeed Odinic, for example, and are several thousand years older than the time of St. Nicholas. But it’s understood that the ‘jolly old elf’ of today is not an accurate representation of Odin, St. Nicholas or anyone other than the nearest shopping mall Santa.
