you know, even if you’re aware of the possibility of a 500 lb stingray 17 feet in ‘wingspan’ leapin’ up outta the water?

what the haydes ya gonna DO about it, y’know?

i mean, it’s not like it’s got a hang-time more than a millisecond!

basically, it’s like being struck by lightning or eaten by a great white shark. in fact, your odds are probably better (or is that worse?) of being bitten by a great white at precisely the same time as lightning strikes you!

still, i feel sorrow for the woman and her family. a terrible way to ‘enjoy the sun’ if ya know what i mean… sigh.

Growing up on the gulf coast, I’ve seen many stingrays jump out of the water- and high. 6 to 8 feet high. It’s pretty disturbing when your sitting on a surfboard.

I’m not sure if the assumption can be made that the animal “attacked” the woman. As it said above, they sometimes breach the water in order to flee a predator or dislodge a parasite, so there is every possibility that this was unintentional on the part of the ray and that the woman was in the wrong place at the wrong time. This might not be an “animal attack” so much as a freak accident.

I am a fisherman who has been all over the world fishing. I have witnessed a Mako shark darting out of the water 10 feet in the air at 40 mph in the Sea of Cortez. I have also seen Manta Rays breaching fully out of water at the same location. Marlin and Sailfish often do the same. There are a lot of different oceanic species who have these characteristics. This isn’t just another fish story. When boating people should be more aware of these things.

No kidding, Loren—Whew!!!

Don’t forget also the 83-year old guy who got barbed in the chest some months after Irwin. His life was saved after (according to him) he heard an “inner voice” telling him not to pull out the barb.

It was taken out in the hospital.

Hopefully this will not increase ill-will towards stingrays. I remember after Irwin died there was a mini-massacre of stingrays down in Australia by his fans.The incident with the old man some months later only inflamed the situation.
