I live in the Pine Ridge area, and I've heard some similar but different rumors pertaining to this time period.

I know one of the medicine men mentioned on that message board, when I get a chance I'll ask him about it. I also know one of the officers that witnessed the big foot sighting in Pine Ridge village.

Has anyone ever taken into account that big foot might possess some of the same characteristics of a chameleon, which is why he is so elusive?

But at the same time, I would shoot one, perhaps not to kill but to injure, to get proof. I think. I'm not sure if I could.

However, they should not and probably would not (if sasquatch ended up being real) press charges for shooting the first one. They kind of can't consider it homicide because, with many exceptions, it is not human. They could pass laws of protection, but not manslaughter laws against the murder of them.

I'm not so sure that someone who shot a Bigfoot couldn't be charged. I'm not sure of the game laws, but basically to kill an animal it has to be a game species within a prescribed season. (Generally not during the summer.) Some states have "varmint" species that can be taken at any time, but a Bigfoot isn't recognized so it definitely isn't listed as either a game or varmint species. So there is a possibility that they can be charged with some form of poaching. Then you have various firearm offenses that are possibilities as well. Then you have the animal cruelty laws, depending on how those are worded.

As far as possible motives for a government cover-up of Bigfoot existence, the "super-soldier" scenario would probably be the most likely. The Soviets were doing work in this area, and we often carried out research parallel to theirs if we were aware of it. (And would probably carry out research like that even if we weren't.)

Very interesting. Could be real, then again it may not be. We'll have to wait and see.

And Illuvatar, I love the name. From Tolkien's The Silmarillion, correct?

OK, it's been almost a week that this supposedly happened and no one has heard anything previously about the event. Yet some folks on a chat forum have the inside info told by a friend of a friend of a friend, etc.? I'm not holding out much hope of this going anywhere. I think someone somewhere is really chuckling about this one. How many unsubstantiated reports of kills and captures have we all seen? But then I guess one has to check them all out to see if my chance the next one may be a real report. Good luck Loren, your a man of great patience and fortitude. My hat is off to you sir.

Dollars to doughnuts (hmm, there is a phrase inflation has changed) it is a rumor, and didn't happen.

If it did, and comes to light, I cannot imagine how it could throw any careers into the dumpster or anything like that.

Neither neo-Darwinians, ID modelers or Creationists are going to have a serious problem encorporating another ape into their models. Even if an unusually intelligent one.

How many animals now have we found have what is properly called language? Self-awareness, emotions the same as ours, problem-solving abilities? Not just primates, but African Grey parrots and a Pacific raven, toothed cetacians, cheruvim and seraphim, and I wouldn't rule out any omnivorous or carnivorous placentals. There is so much we don't know that has been ignored due to mechanistic presuppositions and prejudices against 'native' peoples - including 1st world farmers that actually have significant contact animals.

So if it happened, I cannot imagine it would be suppressed for long. Maybe a year or so and a paper appears in Nature, at the longest.

Of course, if it was an outlaw biker on his way to Sturgis. . .

With all the gun nuts running around in the woods shooting anything that moves, it wouldn't surprise me that bigfoots have been killed or wounded in the past. Untrained and unprincipled hunters will kill anything, for instance, endangered species, like the jerk in Texas that shot a whooping crane for grins. I hope this story is not true. Any one that could kill a bigfoot, unless in self defense, could easily kill another person, in my opinion. Most hunters I know would never let lose a shot at an unknown creature, but would marvel in the experience and priviledge of seeing such a rare and retiring creature.
