Mystery Photos x 3

Posted by: Loren Coleman on August 6th, 2009

Back by popular demand: Okay, time to test your photo id skills, with three images today.

First up, can you identify the context in which this “mystery figurine” exists, and mention where it can be obtained?

Can you identify the following? These figurines are of two cryptids and are not as easy to identify as you might think.

Finally, can you positively id the following species in the last photograph? And where (name in which country) the pic was taken?

Once again, there will be a delay in posting most answers, to encourage a wide variety of guesses.

Loren Coleman About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct). Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015. Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.

That bottom picture is Canis familiaris. I think it was seen in Georgia

The middle picture might be Dire Wolves. That was my initial inclination, but since you said it might not be as straightforward was that.

  2. Alton Higgins responds:

Malaccan mutt with a lion cut? Pretty funny.

  3. shumway10973 responds:

The first one is of a sasquatch that is part of a board game of sorts (possibly role playing). Not sure much else other than some poor sap lost its arm.

Not totally sure on the second, kinda reminds me of the second group of wolves from Japan that Mystery Man talked about.

That is a chow, the location I really can’t get too specific. I think it could be just about anywhere, even just down the street from you, Loren.

  4. doctoratlantis responds:

    1) Sasquatch from the HorrorClix nightmare collection

    2) The figurines look like wolves – but since you say they’re cryptids – I’ll guess “Dire Wolves”. (Though if they were mangier and found in Texas I’d go with chupacabra. 😉 )

    3) That’s a dog with a fancy haircut. The big tubs of Mexlub and the mo-ped make me think this may be in Mexico – or at least south of Texas somewhere.

  5. cryptidsrus responds:

    I’ll try (emphasis on TRY):

    1) Sasquatch figurine—probably highlighting a famous “sighting”—Boggy Creek??? Maybe Momo??? I don’t know that part. One can get it online, I guess. Older “action figure.”

    2) Off the top of my head—I’d say “wolves”—but on second thought—maybe dogs???

    3) Not a Poodle. Shaved Chow? Unfortunately, I’m not good at identifying dogs. (Shame on me.)
I’m sort of “blind,” so I can’t really read the stacked buckets beside the Dog—but the photograph and objects in it sort of give off an “English” vibe. Is it England?

Sorry I’m not better at this. Good exercise in guessing, though. 🙂

  6. mwhelan responds:

    First two I admittedly don’t know…

    3. Definitely canine trimmed to look like lion. Location: Mexico.

  7. CBull responds:

Last picture looks to me as if some “funny guy” shaved his dog to make it look like a lion.

  8. robbo responds:

The top one is a Sasquatch gaming miniature for WizKids Games “Horror Clix” line.

WizKids minatures became phenomenally popular a few years back, largely because of the figures based on Marvel and DC superheroes (Hero Clix). The figures are on a base which has a dial which somehow influences the game play. I never played so I don’t know the rules. I always thought the figures were cool though.

They tried to branch out into other lines (Star Wars, Indy comics, Halo, MechWarrior, etc) and did a line based on creatures and monsters that were, for the most part, in the public domain. The Horro Clix line is from where the Sasquatch figure hails.

  9. jsaenz responds:

    It’s a ufo! (yeah right).

  10. Desert Dave responds:

The wolf like examples might be Shamanu.

  11. geekomancer responds:

Well, I know the top one is a “HorrorClix” kind of a miniature tabletop RPG battle game. You could probably find them at most gaming stores. The line is quite a few years old now, though.

  12. oldphilosopher responds:

I do believe the last photo is of a dog, shaved to resemble a lion. Country: Mexico??

  13. korollocke responds:

The first is a wizkids horror clix bigfoot/sasqautch from the collectable minatures game, they also made a cool lochness monster!(I am a player and have a couple hundred of them.), the second are dire wolves? The thrid is is a chow dog shaved to look lion like.

  14. korollocke responds:

forgot to say horror clix can be bought at most comic/hobby shops and of course ebay.

  15. forsakenfuture responds:

In the last pic,is that a dog shaved to look like a lion?

  16. CryptoInformant 2.0 responds:

Picture #1 – I have no idea – never seen it before in my life.

Picture #2 – …Maybe Japanese wolves (Honshu wolf or whatever?)

Picture #3 – That is a dog, shaved to look like a lion – possibly in the United States.

  17. ilf responds:

pretty sure the first one is a Monster Click, they still might have some of those at newbury comics in portland, but they came out a while ago.

  18. Loren Coleman responds:

Whoa. The previous “mystery photo” quiz with one pic got almost 4 times as many responses as this one that had three photos in it. Was the animal alone more fun?

Earliest correct answers are given below. Ah, shumway10973 was close on so many fronts, early, but without specifics. No one got #2 truly right.

Maybe Japanese wolves (Honshu wolf or whatever?)

Actually, these are the Japanese replicas from the Kaiyodo company of the Hokkiado wolves. Brent Swancer ids them as the “Hokkaido, or Ezo wolves,” in his Cryptomundo blogs.

  19. timi_hendrix responds:

    Loren,

    You fooled me well here!

The first picture I could have sworn that the sasquatch has holding a fish.

My mind immediately raced to the Bill Taylor sighting of January 1970 in BC.

Bill Taylor was driving along when a large Bigfoot crossed the road in front of his car, carrying a fish in its hand. It preceded to climb up a steep bank and disappear into the trees.

But I cannot identify any of the photos.

    – Tim

  20. yo responds:

I just received a different picture of the # 3 applicant in an email……..

    Definitely a dog…..
