I hope that naturalists won't just assume that agw is to blame, and will continue looking for the cause for reduction in numbers of pika. With the decade-long cooling trend, and the amazing increase in the number of glaciers in RMNP, something else might be to blame. I'd hate to see them die out due to politics preventing looking at possible disease or introduced predation problems.

Pika would be an odd choice of main diet for a large hominin. They are small, are very able to move quickly and hide very well beneath scree and rock boils. The haystacks might work as food, but sasquatch could just go downslope, instead. Marmots are everwhere and probably much easier to catch, as would be wapiti, for that matter. The energy expenditure just doesn't seem like a good trade-off.

Way back in the early 1970's I trapped critters in Pika habitat. Something got several of our traps, but nobody caught one. I was one of the few to hear them and the only one to see a pika from our group.

Pikas live under big rocks in talus slopes. Their calls are as good as the prairie dogs' in warning of danger.
And their population was not visibly that large. I would estimate less than 3 families per acre.

So pikas did not impress me as a primary food source, but downslope were ground squirrels that were plentiful in the summer months.

I have to agree with the above posters. One of the most interesting posts you've made, Loren, and that's saying a lot. Never really paid pikas much attention till now. Cool critters!!!

Neat story. Maybe Sasquatch will be found soon. When the Pika is an Endangered Species, Sasquatch will be in violation of Endangered Species Act for eating Pika and he can be arrested and sent to prison.

Well, what would really be grimly amusing is this:

Warming is endangering the pikas...because sasquatch are taking advantage of it to go after them more frequently.

OK, maybe not so amusing, but grimly ironic would work.

A comment maker named "Ferret," appropriately, brings up the black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) as having been an earlier protected mammalian species.

Of course, there are many mammals that have been under protected status in the USA. This, however, is specifically regarding the reason for why the petitioning party feels the need is there (which is not the focus of this posting) for placing the pika under the protection of the Endangered Species Act.

What an amazing creature, glad to hear there are efforts to get it protected! I was under the impression that the Black Footed Ferret was protected- meaning the Pika would not the be first mammal, but perhaps not.
