I think it's also possible, given the size and ephemeral nature of the critters we're talking about, that a totally unknown (to science) insect can be seen by many people, who simply say, hmmmm, that seems odd, and never report it nor collect it.

I've had more than one such sighting, and simply thought: odd. But didn't do anything because surely, despite my personal ignorance, it was documented. Right?

Maybe not.

Here in Germany there is a big moth, the hummingbird hawk moth (<em>Macroglossum stellatarum</em>). It has a very long trunk, and time and again you can find short articles in newspapers or postings in forums about people which thought they have seen a hummingbird. I have to admit that I was fooled too when I was a child and saw such a moth in our garden for the first time. It looked really like a very small hummingbird, and a friend of mine also said he had seen a hummingbird. Hummingbird hawk moths are not very common, I see in general only a small handful of them per year, so it is not surprising that many people don't know them at all. Now here we have a case of a native but little known species which can lead to out-of-place sightings of a very exotic and completely different animal.
