Well, they better find and classify the Orang Pendek quickly. One-third of Sumatra was deforested between 1982-1990 alone. The fastest rate is occurring in the central province of Riau where 85% of the rain forest is now gone. Wild elephant populations have dropped from 5,000+ in 1992 to 2,800 today. The Sumatran tiger, rhino and false gavial are all teetering on extinction on the island. Any undescribed bipedal ape has to be in the same dire circumstances. Indonesia has really pushed the development of plantations on the island.
