I live in Houston, TX and some Okapi were recently introduced to the Houston zoo. (within the last few years, maybe 5 or so) They truly are a beautiful animal. A good friend of mine is a zookeeper at the zoo, so it was a pleasure to get a behind the scenes tour before the introduction to the public. I was impressed with their size. They were bigger than I imagined.

From the Belgian TV news today, a baby okapi was born a few days ago in the Antwerp Zoo.

And you know that the file of the population of resident Okapis in the zoos round the world is kept in the Antwerp Zoo in Belgium.

A few years back I was at the Cincinnati Zoo when they were rebuilding the Okapi enclosure. Their resident okapi was in the petting zoo temporarily, so I had the priviledge of petting him for about 20 minutes that day. His ears looked like they’d be soft, but they’re actually stiff and covered with velvety hair. The time I got to spend with the okapi that day is a memory I treasure, and I’m delighted to know there are more of them in the wild still. They are special animals.
