But remember, folks: a large species of undiscovered ape in the Pacific Northwest is impossible.

I live in Houston, TX and some Okapi were recently introduced to the Houston zoo. (within the last few years, maybe 5 or so) They truly are a beautiful animal. A good friend of mine is a zookeeper at the zoo, so it was a pleasure to get a behind the scenes tour before the introduction to the public. I was impressed with their size. They were bigger than I imagined.

A few years back I was at the Cincinnati Zoo when they were rebuilding the Okapi enclosure. Their resident okapi was in the petting zoo temporarily, so I had the priviledge of petting him for about 20 minutes that day. His ears looked like they'd be soft, but they're actually stiff and covered with velvety hair. The time I got to spend with the okapi that day is a memory I treasure, and I'm delighted to know there are more of them in the wild still. They are special animals.
