I have several photos of Fontainer's cats (P. t. tristis) and pelts that look just like this animal. This cat is rare, but no mystery. It has been known and described since the 1800's. A distinct subspecies of Temminck's cat or Asian golden cat (Pardofelis temmincki). The tail is correctly marked for this morph and is similar to the leopard cat. Just look at Daniel Elliot/Joseph Wolf's Monograph of the Felidae for public images. Check Felis tristis illustations or just Google it it's out there on the web, never mind stewing over a trail cam photo. They never do anything justice.

Compare the trail-cam photos of the leopard cat and the Asiatic golden cat here.

Note how the proportions differ. The leopard cat's body proportions (like the cat in the picture here) resemble a domestic cat's. The golden cat looks much more like a smaller version of a puma.

Maybe the news isn't fake (I hope it's true), but the photo just does not look genuine (to me).

Yes, imamonkey,

Those are some of the things I noticed too. Especially the shadow cast by the leaves: you can see the flat photo through the shadow. The whole thing almost looks like a print, with leaves held or placed in front of it. Also, the leaves conveniently obscure the animal's head, leaving its identity in doubt. The tail dors not look like a Golden Cat's tail, either; it looks like a Leopard Cat's tail.

Yeah, I hate to say this as well, but i'm pretty sure that photo is fake. umm see the leaves at the top left corner how that cast a shadow on the actual photo. And the cat looks like it was photo shopped into the picture.

Yes, camera traps are an excellent tool in cryptozoological research as both MountDesertIslander and DWA referenced above.

The Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy uses mainstream scientific camera trapping in our research.
Gorgeous animal. I would like to have a bengal cat myself but so far I've had no luck to find a breeder in Mexico :-(

Cute cat.

Did not know that was not really a separate species. Once again, the media does not truly check with the "experts."
What else is new?

Thanks for the correction, Loren and Chad.

Yay for camera traps!

Personally, I'd hate to have a bomb go off in my face while I'm out for a walk at night. But given the other things we've done to animals in our history of poor stewardship, if we can largely replace hunting with this, what a step up for our species. It might even be hope.
