Great report and according to the Wiki, which identifies this as an ancient sinkhole,only about 1% having been explored it promises to hold a lot of future discoveries to anticipate. Cheers.

Also in East Tennessee is the Chattanooga Zoo… home to living red pandas. Three, I believe. Just a little FYI, I suppose. Visited there on August 2.

Been away for awhile and haven’t had the chance to comment. Have I missed anything…?

Seriously though, Loren, fascinating report, as usual. Just one question: you liken the Gray Fossil Site to “the East’s version of the West’s LaBrea Tar Pits.” I’m curious, is/was the GFS also a petroleum seepage, i.e. a “Tar Pit?”

If not, has it been determined what brought together such a varied assemblage of Miocene critters?

I’m glad you enjoyed touring the fossil site, we’re pretty proud of it! One of the highlights of the school year for my kids is the field trip to the museum. There’s a place set up outside where they can sift dirt from the digs and sometimes find bone fragments. It’s a fantastic place and we love it!

Mr. Coleman I am so glad you enjoyed my little neck of the woods! The Gray Fossil Site is an fascinating discovery and has already revealed numerous exciting goodies. I urge everybody to visit the site if you are in the neighborhood. The museum has budget struggles due to state cuts and needs all the support it can get. Come on out ya’ll.
