While some call them "black orangs," technically, they are the Eastern Bornean orangutans (<em>Pongo pygmaeus morio</em>). Therefore, the subspecies name appears to have more to do with an isolation factor, not because it is a color morph.

It is pretty ironic and sad that the demand for "clean energy" (in the form of palm oil) is partially contributing to the demise of the rain forest and orangutan populations. This is a hard lesson in the problem of unanticipated problems and unintended consequences.

As far as a food additive, palm oil will fatten you up and clog your arteries real quick. Do yourself and the orangutans a favor and stay away from the stuff.

I wonder on what basis this is classified a sub-species. Could it simply be a color morph? Is that color differentiation enough to classify something as a sub-species?

I thought that the Borneo Orangutan is rarer? Oh well! Hopefully the discovery of the Orang Pendek will not be far behind!
