on the “too kill/not too kill” argument though, it seems from this reading that, without stuffed specimens, observations would have been dismissed (this despite people living on the island, and apparently even some pet owners, knowing of this bird).
I’m normally on the side of the “don’t kill it if you aren’t going to eat it,” folks, but…

It is actually more like trying to put out the fire and catologue the contents at the same time.
