WHAT WAS IT?
A Strange Animal Seen Near Molunkus
Mr. A. J. Darling, the well known keeper of the Exchange Hotel at Enfield, writes the Whig as follows: A lumberman by the name of Fowler started from South Molunkus, December 19th.[,] to go into his camp, five miles away. After going part of the distance he was stopped by a strange animal in the road which disputed the right of way with him.
Having no weapon with which to enforce his own rights Mr. Fowler returned to Molunkus and passed the night at F. B. Coburn’s hotel. The animal, as described, was six or seven feet long, with a long tail, somewhat turned up at the end, had a rather long neck and was of a brownish color.
The next morning a hunter by the name of West, and myself, went with Mr. Fowler to the place where he saw the animal. There we found a track resembling that made by a wolf, but larger, in every respect, and when trailing off it stepped as lengthy as a large New Foundland dog.
I can say that I have travelled the forests of Maine for many years, but never before saw a wild animal’s track like that one.

Do we have any better descriptions than brown color, long neck and turned up tail?
Was this a cryptid canine of some sort? Feline? While I love reading these old news accounts I’m often frustrated by the lack of detailed description.
could it have been someone’s pet dog of extreme size? I remember doing some yard work in college and a dog came over to check me out, fortunately it was really laid back because that thing was huge! Then again, I guess no matter size, anyone should know a dog when they see one. I just wonder something of this sort only because he was able to change course without the creature taking him down. you really have to be careful with most predatory felines when you try to just change course, they think you are trying to “run”.
