Dr. McElwee studies biodiversity, and from what I can tell, ethnozoology (the relationship between culture and animals, a cousin to the more famous ethnobotany that is depicted as looking for cures for cancer in the Amazon). I do not know her other than seeing her paper at the AAA's and talking to her briefly at the end of the session. But her point wasn't so much a strike at cryptozoology, as at the attitudes of some of cryptozoology (and as Loren points out, the scientific community and the press).

She was mixed on the Kthing Vor, since some of the horns have turned up to be manufactured magical items. But she noted the muntjacs and other species that have been discovered. Her problem was, to some degree, with outsiders labeling the whole place a Lost World, putting it beyond space and time and humanity. This is a holdover from the days of colonial expeditions, when a place was considered "Lost" if white people hadn't seen it yet. So when the species began being found, some of the researchers involved and the press (makes for great copy and in turn better chances for grants) called it a Lost World. But as Dr. McElwee said, when the Bigfoot researcher challenged her on this, the hidden space in the region is increasingly just not there much anymore. Really, the main thing I would take from her public presentation of the paper (I do not have a copy) would be to be careful of outsiders throwing a romanticized notion of dark jungles, intrepid explorers, and vanishing natives over non-Western parts of the world when in search of non-recognized animals.
