Lil’ Bigfoot Takes On The IRS

How is Lil’ Bigfoot helping out the museum? The answer is at the end, but for those looking for a fuller rendering of what’s up, here are the details. Skip, if you wish.

Thank you for your donation or interest in contributing to the International Cryptozoology Museum, throughout 2008. I appreciate it.

I wanted to update everyone on the situation at the musuem.

Unbelievably, the day before Christmas, I finally received the IRS letter I’ve been waiting for since April 2007, learning that the ultimate fiscal charges have been figured because the IRS has now revised their view of the museum, which had been in play since the location was founded, in 2003. I have been logically, and with good accountant advice, filing as I was instructed to do, from the beginning, and dutifully paying all my taxes, of course. (The museum is located in the house where I live, but it occupies the entire first floor, separate from all living and personal areas. The site’s separateness is backed up by a box full of documentation of blueprints, documentary DVD programs filmed here, and news articles discussing it - compiled thanks to volunteers Jeff, Jess, Rob and Corey for this!)

Despite this history and separateness, the IRS did an audit on my 2005 accounts, starting during the spring of 2007. After winning the battle that cryptozoology is indeed my business, they now will not acknowledge that the cryptozoology museum is part of my overall income-generating career, via my Cryptomundo blogging, my cryptozoology books, my cryptozoology writings, my cryptozoology speaking engagements, and my cryptozoology television-paid interviews/consultations. Of course, to me, since I am filmed in the museum talking about my research, writings, books, and cryptids, it always has been intermixed, and I was reporting all museum site location and expert fees as my cryptozoology income, too, of course.

But despite fighting the case that the income should be pooled and taxed overall together, as it had been all interrelated, the IRS now is ruling that any income tied to the museum is to be treated separately as it is “museum income” and not part of my overall “cryptozoologist” career. (There’s lots more to this, some of it very personal, and if you want to donate but privately have questions, I will discuss your inquiries via the email address below. Most of the rest is just TMI for here. But there are many levels to this folks, including living an almost monk-like existence to support the museum, and living without vices like alcohol, cigarettes, or meat, but, yes, enjoying baseball games, for my breaks from my cryptozoology work!)

Okay, the IRS has had their final say. That translates now, into new taxes, new penalties, new interest because it dragged on and on (not to mention the tax people charges). But there is now definitely a brave new world of charges…what…the first round of them are due in two weeks, because of part two.

Part two is that the IRS is now fully declaring the museum a “hobby”; I can’t take deductions on it, and saying I must deal with it in a “separate stream” of income (and thus taxed separately), I have to pay old taxes on it from 2005. I must move the museum to a separate location for this all to be rewritten and reconsidered. In the meantime, to just survive, I need to pay this tax bill and work on finding a new location for my 50-year-old collection of artifacts. (I’ve been through three levels of appeals, so I am at the end of the line here. My choices in fighting this specific ruling are over. Also, other years’ taxes have been readjusted taking this new ruling into account, and thus more taxes have been thusly paid.)

This timing is horrible. Happy holidays. Yeah, right. Everyone is hurting. I know that. Nevertheless, are you still interested in contributing to the saving of the cryptozoology collection or having me sell it on eBay? I am not willing to give up the fight, and thus, humbling as it is, I’m asking for contributions. Truly, anything would help.

Not counting the remaining state taxes and tax accountant & defenders charges (much of which has had to be paid along the way of this battle), the federal government is requiring me to pay to them, the IRS, by January 12th, 2009, the sum of $3188.46. It may sound like a little, but with nothing in the bank here, it is like climbing the Himalayas in fifteen days.

I need more than that to carry out the move and deal with ongoing charges (like the past ones that the June appeal took care of), but contributions have been down to nothing for six months. So, I need to face that I must ask again.

Please say, “Yes,” and help if you can.

Take care of yourself and your loved ones first. If you have a little left over, please think of a good cause at the end of the year or the start of the new one, even $25, $100, $1000, here and there from you folks, will help.

Now comes word from the creator of Lil’ Bigfoot, Scott Cunningham, for an idea to reinforce and move along the donations. Here’s what he emails me:

“The way I have it set up, for a $1 donation, I’ll send Lil’ Bigfoot wallpaper. For a $15 donation, I create an original autographed drawing of Lil’ Bigfoot for the recipient, which I then mail out, in addition to sending the wallpaper for the computer. For a $55 donation, I add to the package an original drawing from the strip itself, passing along all donations from my site to you until January 12th — your IRS deadline date. I would assume that the best way to handle this is to make the offer on your site, and have the donations made directly to you via Paypal, via your specific Paypal address (but not via the Cryptomundo button, as that gets misdirected to the admin folks). You could then email me the list of contributors and I will send the materials out to them from my end.”

All other donations can be made and will remain anonymous, or be acknowledged at a later time, in a “Hall of Fame” posting at the museum site (when it can be re-uploaded).
