This reminded me of another Wikipedia article I read recently about the critically endangered New Zealand ground parrot - the Kakapo (well worth the read - utterly fascinating).

It is one of only 3 species of ground parrot (if memory serves correctly) - the other two being Australian.

Of the Australian species, both used to live in the area now occupied by Sydney (my home) but are no longer there. However, at a recent wildlife rescue course I attended, I heard a story that one new rescue member, on their first callout, found one such ground parrot in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. She called someone more senior regarding the callout, and of course was privately laughed at because that species had not been seen in Sydney for over 100 years.

However, when he attended, sure enough, it was a ground parrot, hundreds of kilometers from the nearest known populations.

I meant to share that story a while back... it turned up in one of my local papers, but I've never found the story online.

Just another story of hope :)

Atleast we got something else down here to rediscover, and probably a lot more soon to come.

In my area we are seeing Native Wood Pigeons and Tui, something even my father never saw while growing up here, so some of the conservation is working.
