Johor Photo Release

Posted by: Loren Coleman on August 3rd, 2006

Sean Ang, apparently on behalf of Vincent Chow, has decided to release a small portion of the eyes of an alleged Johor Hominid from one of the alleged photographs (see below).

It’s not much. But it’s something. Of course, it only raises more questions. If they can show us this much, why not a total and complete release of this evidence? What is this really a photograph of? Where was it taken? When? What does it show? From this tidbit, is it a photograph of any great ape in a zoo, a movie costume, or an unknown hominoid? What’s with this "reward" business? This is not scientific. Proving a hoax? It is difficult to get "proof" of a negative.

I don’t buy that the questions and concern of reasonable people interested in this investigation did not have a part in this release. So bring on your comments…below.

Also, this gives us all an opportunity to compare one of the alleged photographic images with the presented drawings supposedly based on those. See here, for example, the "eyes sketch" that may be viewed with what Ang was using as his model, apparently. It is obvious that many details from the photograph were missed in the sketch or tracing. This further calls into question the usefulness of all previous drawings or tracings posted as important submissions in this examination. Only the photos will do, in the end.

Johor Hominid Eyes

Here’s the snippet of the "photograph" and Sean Ang’s statement:

Johor Hominid Eyes

The above Eye Photo is part of the bigger photo labeled as JH002: Jogi. Jogi is a short form for Johor Girl (Jogi). There is also a possibility for us to name the individual Jody (Johor Lady). Perhaps this could be appropriate, but as usual most sapiens female prefer a name representative of youthfulness and vivacity we assume Jogi would be more appropriate. You can debate over this, and we can change the name accordingly.

The release of the eye photo is a big breakthrough, made possible via Vincent’s art of diplomacy. Let us extend our gratitute to the JH Guardians (Wee and Gang) for the permission. However, please note that this should not be construed as us succumbing to various pressure groups and very impatient individuals who are demanding the release of the photos without understanding our problems.

Our approach is as follows:

a. Luring the tiger out of the mountain
We (johorhominid.org and JWPS) are offering a cash price of RM1200 to anyone, anywhere around the world, who can find a match of the photo or prove to us beyond doubt that the above eye photo is a Hoax. Additional to that, the successful individual stand to receive free accommodation (2 nights 3 days) in a 5 Star hotel in JB, plus a guided tour (conducted personally by Wee Pao Chin) to the important sites in Johor’s rainforest where the hominin is likely to be seen. Airfare to Malaysia is not inclusive.

b. Sacrificing the plum for the peach
We also hope to reduce resentments toward us to further push the Johor Hominin Agenda. Frequent galls and rancours may distract serious discussions, and infact we are hoping that more serious researchers, experienced palaeoanthropologists or anthropometricians will come forward to provide views on the issues. The release of the eye photo hopefully will attract their attention.

Mean time, put on your thinking cap and tell us more of what you think of the Real Eyes of Jogi.

Sean Ang
p/s please forward the photo to all your friends

aw, come on! I would have done it if they threw in the airfare.

  2. voodoo1 responds:

The last thing I would do in sneaking up to photograph a family of undiscovered primates would be to use my flash.

  3. Ole Bub responds:

    Thank you…Sean…stay safe.

    seeing is believing…

  4. geaux jeaux responds:

You’ve got to be kidding me? This is the picture they say was taken from 3 stories up in a tree?

First off, I actually laughed out loud when I saw the picture. I never actually thought we would see any type of picture from those guys, but they should of left that one in the drawer.

What are guerillas running around in the rainforest doing with such high quality camera equipment?

Now the bet. I’m not sure how much RM1200, but I bet it’s not much. Why would someone who can prove the picture is fake want to take a trip to B.F.E. to tour a rainforest where fake hominds live?

  5. mauka responds:

If real someone explain the reptilian like looking nose, looks scaly.

  6. Nachzehrer responds:

Oh, dear. That’s a piece of the actual photograph? My unscientific gut feeling does not say “living animal”. It says “model”, “sculpture”, or possibly “taxidermy”.

  7. One Eyed Cat responds:

Well the picture part is very clear so that claim has some evidence now.

However the ’skin’ looks fake. And I notice the eyes are rather bloodshot. If it’s a costume somebody needs to get to an eye doctor, sooner rather than later.

  8. Mari responds:

Looks like a still from a cheap 70’s/80’s sci-fi movie.

  9. youcantryreachingme responds:

Either the photographer had one heck of a lens, or they were a mere 2 feet away from this girl.

  10. Judy Green responds:

It is quite interesting, but looks more like a reptile than a primate. Certainly nothing like our Patty’s eyes. Where is the hair? All I can see is scales.

  11. Ole Bub responds:

Come on folks…cut them some slack…they were gracious enough to tease us with some skin….you folks are all over them like a duck on a June bug…

    No bucks…no Bigfoot…

    ole bub and the dawgs

  12. mysticrhythms responds:

It looks like a still from an old Godzilla movie where there was a baby one. people may remember the one I’m talking about - the name escapes me. but for them to really think that we would accept this as an actual photo - now there is a joke.

  13. EastexQueenB responds:

My first thought was a piece of taxidermy, too. I’m sorry, but there is nothing in that photo that suggest that the subject is alive. (If it was, it’s certainly not now!) It’s probably not even real. It looks like a still-frame from some lost Godzilla movie. He was real, too, wasn’t he?

I also wouldn’t place any bets on the quality of the 5 star hotel…

    QB

  14. ABoyd C responds:

This looks to me like a sculpture using taxedermy glass eyes. Not a real animal and not a costume.

Not primate eyes though, the pupils are slits like a feline rather than round like a priimate. These are farily readily available from a taxedermy or sculpture supply firm.

The model in this photograph exhibits pretty good sculptural skills but not really good. I can think of several people who could have done better.

The eyeballs are far more protruding than any primate I can think of, suggesting they might be half-round taxedermy eyes stuck onto a sculpted head with “eyelids” sculpted around them. Also, there are no visible eyelashes or tear ducts. The tear duct on the right eye in particular should be very visible in this photograph but there is no hint of one.

I have a pretty extensive collection of primate photographs for use as artistic reference and none of them resemble the construction of whatever was photographed here.

If this photograph is a hoax (and I’m assuming it is) it was a mistake to use such a close-up which reveals so many telling signs of fakery.

  15. David V responds:

Ah, I don’t buy it for a second. It looks too glossy, to fakey. Voodoo 1 has a very good point, a flash reflection is clearly seen in the eyes. For some reason when I look at this, all I can think of is “Fiji Mermaid”. Perhaps that is because this looks like a taxidermy specimen.

  16. Sky King responds:

“Luring the Tiger Out of the Mountain”? “Sacrificing the Plum for the Peach”? Aren’t those Asian Sex Club terms? ;)

  17. Mnynames responds:

I think I’m with Ol’ Bub here. I also think that not much can really be determined from such a snippet. A lot of detail if it’s a hoax, especially the blood vessels in the eyes. The flash could just be the reflection of the sun, seems to be close enough to the correct angle, given the shadows. What just doesn’t look right to me are the eyelids- They seem far too thick and heavy.

The pros and cons remain about equal for me, for now. I reserve any judgement until I can see the full photo, if only for the fact that I don’t think you CAN really judge from this…

  18. Ole Bub responds:

    Good evening Bloggers…

The facts will emerge soon enough….put your self in their shoes…I think they have been most cooperative…I’m reserving judgement til all the facts are known and all the photos and documentation has been thoroughly reviewed and scrutinized…folks can be too advesarial thereby dissuading cooperation and the sharing of information…JMHO

There is nothing to be gained from rude insulting comments…except alienation…JMHO

    No bucks…No bigfoot…

    ole bub and the dawgs

  19. dws responds:

The entire Johor Bigfoot thing is a hoax to get tourists to travel to Malaysia. I know this for a fact that my uncle does do work there with some members of the government. Isn’t it just convineient to do so? The Malays just eat this stuff up and they want tourist money…This IS Malaysia, truely asia…

  20. Chicago Dan responds:

Maybe it is the equipment used or maybe when this section was blown up or maybe when the picture was scanned etc. Whatever the cause and maybe for all those reasons and more this crop is just too grainy. I couldn’t be more disappointed. I reserve my opinion because from what I see no conclusive judgment can be made. I sure hope the rest of the photos are of better quality. I sure hope this is not Zira from Planet of the Apes.

As a side note I think the manner this situation has been handled screams of hoax. Let’s see if we can guess what the next tidbit of “evidence” will be released. My guess is a crop of a hand.

  21. Sky King responds:

The more I look at that photo, the more convinced I become it was clipped out of a magazine, scanned and cropped. Then the “supporting” drawing was done.

It’s from some sci-fi “B” movie, something like THE HIDEOUS SUN DEMON. Probably clipped from FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND magazine, or an Asian sci-fi movie mag that was in Ang’s basement.

  22. DGroup responds:

Did anybody else notice that the bloodshot aspect appears identical in both eyes? And if this was shot in the forest, then what’s that in the background?

  23. shumway10973 responds:

well, definitely not reptilian. There is some tuffs of hair behind its right eye (pics left). Though if still alive this “girl” needs lotion. I dunno, something is amiss. It almost screams orangutan, but not quite. Organgutan’s eyes are “smaller” with bigger eye socket or skin. hey, if airfare was included, I might want to try this out. What a way to go see some beautiful country. I guess I will wait for the photos (complete next time please…see I even asked nicely) before making any real judgements.

  24. Aravat responds:

    BUNKO

  25. Scotty responds:

    I’d know those eyes anywhere… that’s my next-door neighbour!

  26. Sky King responds:

What’s in the background is a very-out-of-focus movie sound stage. Or make-up area.

  27. Tobar responds:

the eyes look animated like they’re CG.

  28. sasquatch responds:

Baby Godzilla was named Minya and the first movie he was in was “Godzillas Revenge”, then he appeared in “Destroy All Monsters”. This definitely looks like 1960’s Japanese monster movie styled work. There eyes were always exagerated, and phoney looking like this picture. I guess this seals the Johor deal as a jive job. The eyes of the creature on their website look much more real than this. Maybe Biscardi and the Johor boys can swap secrets on really keen monster costume making.

  29. mrdark responds:

I’m thinking Godzilla’s son as well. (I thought he was named Godzooki, but I was 8, so that’s probably wrong… I know he’s got another name in Godzilla: Final Wars.)

Now, on to my bit of serious analysis. This proves it’s a hoax.

    How?

The previous arguments for not releasing pictures were very, very shaky. I’ve viewed this whole story with a jaundiced eye because of those lame, pathetic excuses. The irony is, in light of those arguments, releasing this snippet of a photo actually proves it’s a hoax.

The previous arguments (saving it for a book, whatever) are all absolutely exclusive. As in, their point is that NO photos could be released. After all, if their reasons would logically allow even one photo to be released, then why not do it and receive the attention of the planet? Because their arguments were that -nothing- could be released…they’re basically invalidating those arguments by releasing this. If they can release this, they can release whatever they want. If they can release whatever they want and only choose this, there can be only one reason: they just aren’t really holding any cards.

Sad, really. One more hoax to make the whole crypto world look like a bunch of kooks. These guys should call Biscardi or whatever his name is, they’ll have a Fox special whipped up in no time.

  30. Steve20394 responds:

this is the reason a lot of people doubt the existence of the so called ”bigfoot”

  31. P.S.Anderson responds:

Seriously, if all of this Johor business ends up a hoax, the damage and let down all real cryptos like us will feel is atrocious.

  32. MadM2000 responds:

Looks like one of Jim Henson’s puppets from the 80s. The movie Dark Crystal comes to mind.

Doesn’t the nose area seem like the begining of a birds beak??

    Maybe a crow/man hybrid puppet

  33. oldbutnotstupid responds:

Please, enough of this phoney stuff. If this had been real they would have been screaming that they were the best searchers since God.

  34. oldbutnotstupid responds:

Be careful if a video does come out on this one. There may be a reason it is female. A believeable male chest might not be big enough to hold the robotics needed to make the model work. Nice of them to show us the production drawings before the model, seems like a come on to their first horror flick.

  35. Chymo responds:

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Ok, this is a maquette, or model. They should have gone with a rendered 3d computer image. I’ve seen human faces rendered so realistically it is hard to distinguish them from a real photograph. I’ve lost the link, but there’s a site devoted to it out there, if I find it I’ll post it.

  36. bobblewood responds:

National Geographic photographers from three stories up couldn’t produce this result, much less untrained gorillas er guerillas!

  37. kamoeba responds:

Minya first appeared in Son of Godzilla (1967), then Destroy All Monsters (1968), and finally Godzilla’s Revenge (also in the 2004 movie Godzilla Final Wars). In recent years younger Godzilla monsters in various other incarnations have also been known as Baby Godzilla, Little Godzilla and Godzilla Junior. Regarding the photo, it looks more like Toho’s King Kong costume from King Kong Escapes (1967) to me.

  38. sausage1 responds:

“What d’you wanna make those eyes at me for,

When they don’t mean what they say?”

  39. jayman responds:

At least the choice is clear now, it’s not ape or human, which leaves unknown or hoax. I know where I’d put my money…

  40. jjames1 responds:

…and now the Johor Hominid website is conveniently off-line and “down for maintenance.” Suspicious?

  41. Oxyatl responds:

Looks to me like a close up from the Green Marine Gargantuan who fought the Brown Mountain Gargantuan in the old 70’s Japanese movie “Battle of the Gargantuans”
    Fake fake fake

  42. twblack responds:

Well here is my 2 cents - It looks like a screen shot from a movie. I do agree with Ole Bub at least we got something out of them. I have been hard on them also.

I think we can not be 100% sure until we get the entire pic. Looks like the skin is not reptile but very dry and in a hot jungle should that not be the case??

Oh some of them ole Godzilla movies are great. I think I have seen them all.

  43. Loren Coleman responds:

BTW, for those asking, online and off, was I see going to write the forward to the book..ha ha…it was always part of the deal that I see and investigate the photos before I write a word…they were not forthcoming…and my skepticism grew…

Now…this blog writes the beginnings of the final chapter of this part of the Malaysian Bigfoot drama…

    Johor Hominid Photos: Hoax!

  44. Dark-Obsessor responds:

Oh my god! That is classic! There’s no WAY that is real! Just look at them! They look too fake to even consider them authentic… And the johorhominid.org site will probably never be revived… I went on the forums several times and, in a calm, collected way, argued with other ‘researchers’ about how many ways this could be a hoax. Hopefully they’ll now agree with me.

  45. gridbug responds:

I’m thinking maybe one of the goblins from Labyrinth? What a letdown. *sigh*

  46. One Eyed Cat responds:

Well since he came up, Godzooki was Godzilla’s nephew in a 1970’s Saterday morning animated series. Do not remember how nephew was arrived at, but remember that’s how he was described.

Called ‘Zooki’ for short, that’s where I got the idea to shorten Godzilla to Zilly.

No it’s not Zira her face was brown.

I mean the skin looks fake because of the highlighs and texture that does NOT even look like living tissue. Zira’s face passed for that better.

  47. aaha responds:

    We got punk’d!!!

  48. Ceroill responds:

I agree that it looks suspicious, but I echo the sentiments to withold judgements until more is seen.

  49. Alton Higgins responds:

The lack of DD by Chow and Ang certainly came back to bite them. Too bad they didn’t heed the advice and accept the assistance offered to check out the photos before circumstances reached this point of humiliation.

  51. Alton Higgins responds:

Yesterday, in reference to the eyes photo shown above, Loren wrote, “Is this the first break in the release of the photographs?”

Turns out it was THE big break, albeit not in the manner anticipated.

Kudos to the French and Italians who, it seems, are perfectly capable of collaborating productively in the wake of the World Cup. :)

  52. truistique responds:

A few months ago (long before the story on the johore hominid)saw a documentary on Vietnam and Cambodia. In it, a farmer claimed to the Western journalist to have once seen an unusuual creature in the jungle there that no one there klnew or had seen before. the creature, he claimed, resembled a human being but was monkey like. It was walking on two legs and not a gorilla, baboon, monkey or any known species (presumably the guy grew up in the jungle area). My view is let’s not assume that the johore Hominid story is a hoax and dismiss it. We may be unravelling something very interesting about the history of the Southeast Asian Region; personally i do not care if the Hominid story comes out true or false. but as a scientist, i feel obliged to throw a word of caution. this cvould be one of the biggest findings of the century. My suggestion to Dr Vincent is that if you think you can make money out of this, then it is from the hair. The background of your hominid pioctures (assuming they are genuine)could be helpful if it fits the SPECIFIC location in the jungle you claim to have sighted the creature. But as a serious researcher, let me tell you bluntly, this one is not going to make you filthy rich. Sharing the knowledge and proving your findings will put you in the world’s who’s who in scientific discoveries. Choose your path wisely lest you be branded a hoax monger by the doubters who (naturally) will outnumber those who are willoing to verify and help yuo search. Contact the local universities and the special branch for DNA verification. otherwise do not waste anybody’s time anymore.

  53. Alton Higgins responds:

Earth to truistique: the Johor hominid pictures were hoaxes.

As for knowledge to share and working with universities, not much is there. The photographed and cast “footprints” appear to have been made by rhinos or are otherwise cases of mistaken identity.

I doubt that the hair results in anything; this leaves a few instances of sightings, which may or may not be valid. If one assumes that some fraction of the sightings are legitimate, then there remains some sliver of possibility that an undocumented species of large primate awaits discovery by Chow or Noll or communist rebels or whoever is out there looking for it or is otherwise most likely to stumble across its path.
