I find this story especially interesting since I recently watched a noted evolutionist argue the case for the <a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/elaine_morgan_says_we_evolved_from_aquatic_apes.html" rel="nofollow">"aquatic ape hypothesis</a>:" the idea that humans evolved from primate ancestors who dwelt in watery habitats.

There also seems to be a possible association with the idea popular among many "metaphysical" types the dolphins are somehow our ancestors...or at least point to a prominent split of the family tree.

Fhqwhgads:

Lovecraft's writing has never really struck me as scary. It's really better enjoyed as fantasy/sci-fi with a focus on the occult and unknown.

My comment about Dagon referred to the half man, half fish Philistine and Amorite god, not Lovecraft's literary creation.

As an aside, I can't stand Lovecraft's writing. He seems to think big=scary, old=scary, and mindless=scary. Maybe he was frightened by a redwood as a child.

Were it not for the specifics of the sightings, I'd cross my fingers for Deep Ones. As it is...

Not holding my breath on this one, sorry.

Fhqwhgads:

Did not know that. Thanks for the information.

Hope more "sightings" occur and hopefully a photograph would be snapped. Maybe even have the mermaid videotaped.

Mermaids are some of my favorite cryptids. Great story here, Loren.

If it is verified there is a mermaid here swimming around "Dagon's old stomping grounds," then Kiryat Yam will be more than just tourist attraction, I agree. Actually Council Member Zilberman may have to worry about TOO many people overflowing the area. Plus the army of satellite and news trucks that would swarm around the town would present a problem. Zoning regulations may have to be redrawn. ;)
