Actually, I think a better Ozzie translation of “tramping” would be “going walkabout”.

Actually, having done it in both places, “tramping” isn’t so much the Oz as the NZ term.

In Oz it’s called bushwalking.

(American students call it backpacking when you take a daypack on a train in Europe. Something needs to be done about that, IMHO.)
