With the exception, of course, that the thylacines existence as a real animal is confirmed, does anyone else notice the similarities between the search for the thylacine and the Bigfoot? Lots of convincing sightings/reports, a few fairly convincing videos, footprint evidence-but no creature, or a part of a creature. Based on what I've read here and elsewhere, I'm pretty certain that both these creatures live. I wonder which one will be proven to exist first?

I didn't know about the more recent track evidence detailed here - evidence that we accept, beyond doubt, as proof of presence for any mammal known to science.

As I have said before here: scientific evidence is what science says it is. All they have to do is look the other way when it's presented, and presto! no scientific evidence. Why, it's black magic, is what it is! If more people understood how science really works in the real world, they'd look askance at it more than they do. Science is perfect. Until scientists practice it.

I hope Dr. Guiler didn't die disappointed. The quest is the grail, you know?

RIP.

I also do not believe in coincidences.

Nice to know Guiler died "in the saddle," so to speak.

Nothing like dying in the thick of life. RIP, Mr. Guiler.

Rest In Peace Eric. My condolences to the Guiler family for their loss. Not only is it a loss to his family and friends but also to all the thylacine supporters and believers and to crytozoology as a whole. Hopefully a live specimen will be collected or even caught on film so that his work will be proven.

Thanks Loren for compiling this piece. With over 50 years' contribution to the subject of the thylacine, his achievements deserve merit and publication. My condolences also to family, friends and colleagues.

I stopped believing in "luck" and "coincidences" a lont time ago.

Anyway, while it is sad Dr. Guiler's career wasn't crowned by the re-discovery of a live thylacine, I've no doubts the younger generations of researchers & cryptozoologists will carry on the torch he lit.

Rest In Peace.

Thank you for the heads up Loren. Although this story had a sad ending, at least Dr. Eric Guiler was doing what he loved to do when he had his stroke. He was actually in the field. So I hope that brings some comfort to friends and family.

I suspect that the thylacine is alive somewhere out in the bush, although their numbers are probably very limited. I say this because of the number of sightings of this elusive creature versus the few number of people actually engaged in looking for it.

Hopefully, someone will pick up and continue the work of Dr. Guiler. May he rest in peace! My condolences to the family.

We have lost a great scientist. Thank you, Loren, for this well-written obituary. I still have hopes that, one day, we will find the thylacine alive and vindicate his work.
