Extinct Australian Frog Rediscovered

Posted by: Loren Coleman on September 15th, 2008

The Armored Mist frog, a species not seen anywhere for 17 years has been rediscovered in a remote location in the far north of Australia.

James Cook University’s Professor Ross Alford said it was feared that the Armored Mist Frog (Litoria lorica) had been lost in the devastating outbreaks of amphibian chytrid fungus that started in the Wet Tropics 20 years ago, according to Wildlife Extra.

    Good stuff. My heart gladdens.

Pardon my naivete, but why is it called “Armored Mist.”

Can’t look it up just now. Sorry. Just wondering.

Because it was “myst” for 17 years?

Seriously - it’s a type. It should be “Armoured Myst Frog.” I did a quick search and can’t see a reference presently for how it got it’s name. A quick guess is that it seems to live in rainforest (myst) and it’s skin looks a lot like “armour” or military camaflage.
