I read (and loved) several of his books when I was young-- both the exotic zoology ones (which weren't all cryptozoology: some of the essays in them were about known weirdness, some [e.g. the salamander essay in "Sal & Oth Won," which is about olms and Kamerrer's scientific fraud] about the history of science, some even about strange plants) and some on space travel. They certainly inspired my interest in some of the topics, and I'm sure they inspired many, many otherr readers with an interest in science. Craters on the moon tend to be named for figures in the history of astronomy [e.g. Copernicus, Ptolemy]-- even though Ley doesn't seem to have been an important original researcher in the field, I'm glad they named one for him!
