You know, the three-legged stance, the hunched position.. is it at all possible this was a sighting of a kangaroo or wallaby? When at rest, the tail would be down on the ground, almost in a tripodal position; under bad lighting, this could look like a leg. They often move in a four-legged hunched position when casually feeding, then raise upright when moving quickly, eg fleeing. Granted, this doesn’t explain the sounds Loren heard, but there are many “phantom roo” sightings in the US.. could this be another?

I’m going to have to track that book down.
Lived here in Illinois for close to 20 years and never heard of the Enfield encounters. Fascinating. Between Enfield and Mattoon, Illinois certainly has its share of high strangeness.
