For our American friends, Foyles is a very large bookshop in London with, I believe, many branches around the UK (e.g. ouside the Festival Hall). It was famous, amongst other reasons, because of the strange system whereby you had to queue in three different lines to buy a book.

Christopher Foyle’s aunt was a very eccentric woman. She built up the empire, and was something of a philanthropist. She was a regular feature in gossip columns because of her literary lunches, much beloved of authors and publishers. She once wrote to Hitler and suggested that, instead of burning books he let her have them and sell them.

Christopher Foyle is no less eccentric, inviting shoplifters back into the store to discuss their misdemeanours. He too is apparently quite a shrewd business person.
