I remember that Discover article well, and am sad to say I totally fell for it. Oddly, I remember it having taken place in the late 80’s, very early 90’s when I was still in High School. Apparently I fell for it when I was in college…

Just a minor correction:

The Discover magazine article on the ‘ice borers’ had the name of the researcher as “Avril Poisson”, which was telling, as it translates to “April Fish”, which is what you traditionally exclaim in France when someone has fallen for your April Fool’s prank.

I read the ‘95 Discover issue back in the day. I didn’t buy into it because of the doctor’s name, Dr. Aprile Pazzo. It is Italian for April Fool.

I do see the possibility of Cloning the Woolly Mammoth or if we can find a specimen of a male frozen in time we maybe able to de-frost the testicles and obtain some sperm and introduce it in vitro to a Female Indian Elephant.
