Cryptomundo 2.0 Is Up

Posted by: Loren Coleman on January 22nd, 2007

The new site is up. Anyone have any general feedback as well as any suggested specific enhancements that you would like to see in the near future?

I don’t know if it is just my computer, but I cannot see the individual headers for my blog “CryptoZoo News” or Craig’s “Bigfoot Report” any longer.

How does it look to you folks?

  1. Cutch responds:

I thought I was at the wrong site at first! A very pleasant surprise, to be sure.

  2. MBFH responds:

I left a comment on Craig’s earlier post that notified us of the change but have noticed something else. In some of the replies to posts the box seems to be too small - the beginning and ends of lines of text are missing.

    Otherwise, all good stuff.

  3. richard_from_idaho responds:

Looking good! Fine tune it a bit and we’re all happy. Cheers!

  4. DWA responds:

    Looks nice!

Did notice some text being cut off at the ends of already-posted material, something at least one other poster has mentioned.

    Quibbles. great job!

  5. DWA responds:

I might want to note also that when you check the “subscribe” box for email comments…well, it’s like the sasquatch. The check mark may be there….or it may not. It’s awfully hard to see.

Another quibble; but you know what I really like? the PREVIEW! It makes it much easier to go over your stuff before posting. I dunno, text boxes and editing never went together well with me.

  6. awalrus1 responds:

I use your RSS feed. And on each individual post, I can call up the entry, but there is no indication of who authored the post (Loren, Craig, etc) though I do see that info on the main site.
So far so good, guys, keep it up.
    steve

  7. fuzzy responds:

    CRYPTOMUNDO
    “REFUSE TO GROW OLD”
“Take this and live forever” !

How do you expect new visitors to take this scientific Site seriously? And then, here’s the same ad again!>>

It may be a wonder elixir, but Good Grief, under the headline?

  8. fuzzy responds:

Have you noticed what happens when you put your cursor arrow on “CRYPTOMUNDO”? Neat!

  9. DWA responds:

    Fuzzy: follow the money, man.

I think the same thing you do. I also think that our good friends need to pay for this site. And there’s a company that’s willing to pay.

You’d think the Fortune 500 might do this as part of a push to ensure free dialogue in these United States.

    OK, I’ll wake up now.

  10. freshyill responds:

At first, I thought “wow, this new design looks like ass.” Then I checked and realized that it only looks like ass in Firefox, and I’m guessing every browser that isn’t Internet Explorer. Seriously, it’s nearly unusable in Firefox.

On the bright side, I really do like how it looks in IE. Now you just need to get it working for other browsers.

  11. Ceroill responds:

Looks good, Loren. So far I like it.

  12. rani124 responds:

So far I like it a lot!

  13. KenMD responds:

Post some more video to see if it runs on the page.
    The cellphone BF did not.

  14. rani124 responds:

The video worked great for me. That is soooo funny!

  15. chrisf responds:

Love the new look but that “REFUSE TO GROW OLD” banner is kind of an eyesore. Very distracting for a site I love!

  16. PhotoExpert responds:

    I like it!

The only comment I have is that the longer a thread becomes, the left margin starts cutting into the words. If you go to the “Do You Like Cryptomundo?” thread, you will notice that you can read Craig’s thread on the left side. Every letter shows up. But as the thread becomes longer, you will notice the middle posts have their left hand margins starting to disappear. If you look at the last post in that thread, the first letters of each word are missing from the left hand margin.

  17. awalrus1 responds:

FYI, the site looks about the same in Firefox on the Mac.
I know it’s a challenge to get any site to work in all the browsers, though.
Stay away from Microsoft technology, and you won’t have that issue :-) steve

  18. Craig Woolheater responds:

The top suggestion I would have for visitors to the site is to have the latest version of whatever your browser of preference is.

Having been an Internet Explorer stalwart for many years, it took some time adjusting to Firefox.

However, it is now my browser of choice. I would recommend switching to Firefox to anyone that comes here to Cryptomundo.

I do have both the latest version of Firefox and IE 7, and they both display the comments with no problem of text being cut off.

  19. robbo responds:

I have to echo the comments that the site looks quite dreadful in Firefox. I am running 2.0 with a screen resolution of 1024×768.

Firefox is a strong adherent to web design standards, which are good for the web community in general. Don’t fall into the MSIE-proprietary code trap! Free the web!

    Love the site though.

  20. jjames1 responds:

Craig, with all due respect, I’m running IE 7.0 on a high-end computer, and I’m getting the word cut-off issue, as well.

  21. joppa responds:

I got word cut-out too. Otherwise looks good.

  22. Loren Coleman responds:

I am running with IE 5.1, so I won’t even tell you what I’m seeing and not seeing.

Keep them coming. We are compiling all of these “insights” for some fine-tuning.

Let us know what you see, what’s causing you headaches, and, well, what may be working on your system that someone else is saying they can’t make work.

    Thank you for your patience.

Making the world better through technology….

  23. Ceroill responds:

I’m using IE7, and I’m having no text problems. I can’t see the video from the phone cam though.

  24. sundevit responds:

Same here: Firefox totally messes up the site (or the other way around ;) ). As far as the design is concerned: well, it wasn’t too sexy before, but it certainly isn’t now. This header simply looks too much like someone’s first attempts in photoshop. The usual clumpsy fx-mashup (transparency, shadow and stuff). But I guess Cryptomundo readers don’t give a damn anyway … so I’ll just live with it.

Still a great resource, nonetheless. Keep it up.

  25. DWA responds:

My comment on word cutout is similar to Jjames’s.

(I think that’s him. Can’t see his entire name hee hee.)

I’m on a pretty hi-end machine/version of IE myself. So I’m not sure that’s the whole story here.

  26. Sunny responds:

The site looks awesome on Firefox at my house…no cutoff, and it doesn’t look even remotely like any ass I’ve ever seen.

Maybe we’ll find out that BF takes that stuff ’cause he refuses to get old.

  27. greywolf responds:

Wow guys looks pretty good. Seems to work well for first time..

  28. kittenz responds:

    How odd…

I’m at work, running Win2K Pro / IE 6 (Win2K does not support IE7). I got that strange cut-off text error too. Then I pulled up Firefox and BINGO! - no cut-off text!

    The new look is great!

  29. LeCope responds:

It looked quite messed up on Safari 1.3 on a Mac…so I reluctantly downloaded Firefox, and can see it now. It looks nice, but is there a reason why it won’t work in Safari?

    Thanks,

    L

  30. DWA responds:

Just so you know: I’m not getting the cutoff text anymore…and I didn’t have to change a thing. (IE, 6.0)

  31. skeptik responds:

Strange use of green. I guess it just takes some time getting used to.
My resolution is 1700×1024 so all (non css-based) designs look a bit weird/contracted.

Finally a Preview function for the comments!

  32. mrbf2006 responds:

I love the new look, guys. Looks great. Keep up the good work!!!!!!

  33. rani124 responds:

I’m running Firefox 1.5 and I brought it up in IE 6.0 and I’m not having any text cut off. I can see the video just fine in Firefox, but it doesn’t play in IE.

  34. Raptorial responds:

It looks quite interesting. Sadly, I took too much time making the banner Bigfoot dance.

  35. Craig Woolheater responds:

We have addressed the issue with the comment text being cut off.

Keep the comments coming. We are logging, prioritizing and addressing them.

    Thanks!!!

  36. Darkstream responds:

I’m using Safari on a Mac and the CSS isn’t very pretty. The elements don’t seem designed well with each other at all and just stream down and down and down the page. I’m hoping it’s a CSS issue. I’ll check it out with Firefox.

Update: Site looks fine in Firefox. Perhaps you’re not using standards compliant CSS elements because Safari is one of the most standards compliant browsers out there and the page looks like a mess in it. Good luck working out the bugs, however. If you’re interested in what the page looks like for me, contact me and I’ll send you a scrolling screen grab of it.

Out of curiosity, what is your development platform and browser?

  37. RockerEm responds:

I LOVE THE NEW SITE WAY BETTER!!!!!

  38. busterggi responds:

Looks great! Who did the pic of the sea monster?

  39. dws responds:

    Great going! AWESOME SITE!

  40. Mike Smith responds:

WOW! I like the face lift.

  41. loyalfromlondon responds:

    I love the new design.

I co-own http://www.WorldofKJ.com and I know how hard it is to redesign a main site.

Now we just need some stunning crypto news!!!

  42. Mnynames responds:

After reading the posts, I compared how it looks between Firefox (What I normally use), and IE (Which my wife prefers), and I really can’t see any difference whatsoever.

As for the overall site, all I can say is that it looks a bit shrunken (Smaller text) and busy for me, but nothing really to complain about. Likely the crowded look will sort itself out as you make adjustments and get a better sense of things. The comments section seems wider, which I like, but that’s probably the result of the smaller text.

My only valid criticisms are that I have noticed that sometimes the Submit and Reset buttons have been switched while posting today, and I think the subscribe box is way too small. Keep on tweaking…

  43. Mnynames responds:

I have to say that I also quite like how each post has a slightly different background- makes it a lot easier on the eye to keep your place and to find different posts.

  44. dre222 responds:

I’m a “feed”er too and would like to see the author listed within the post as well.

  45. kittenz responds:

I LIKE the use of green, along with sepia tones. It gives the site a “forest-y” vibe. Even the “Refuse to Grow Old” banner looks good now! Lol if it has to be there it may as well be tasteful instead of glaring orange.

Seriously, you guys have done a terrific job.

  46. youcantryreachingme responds:

Once you are in an article, it does not state the author anywhere. The frontpage, with article summaries, does list the author, but readers might arrive directly at an article via an RSS feed, or external link, for example.

The old site had the author’s name in the header (as part of the graphic), but from memory, also had it written before or after the text of the article (with a timestamp).

It would be great if you could add the author’s name to article pages again.

Also - be sure to test the site in all major browsers. I’m using IE6 and the banner seems to “work” sometimes, and other times not.

(Loren - I presume you run a stats package against this site… you can check what browsers, OSs and screen resolutions your visitors are using. You can email me if you need help in this area.)

    Chris.

  47. youcantryreachingme responds:

PS… if you really had some time, you could better utilise CSS in your style sheet to wrap your article around your advertisements. Otherwise, for the bulk of the comments (as in this article), you get a wad of brown space between the comments and the right-hand graphic. If I knew how to help, off the top of my head, I would. But then, I’d fix my site up also! :D

  48. fuzzy responds:

I like the tag, “Investigate Further”…

  49. mystery_man responds:

Darkstream, that’s odd because I’m using Safari on Mac too and the site looks just fine to me. I love what has been done with the site, but there is one tiny little thing. I miss the ability to jump to a particular page of posts. Before, we could jump to page 3 or 4 or whatever, where as now there are only two choices, “older posts” and “newer posts”. I liked being able to jump to any page without having to cycle through them. Nitpickey, I know. Otherwise, great job!

  50. Craig Woolheater responds:

As I said earlier, please keep the comments coming.

    We are addressing the issues.

We have added the author and time stamp under the individual post heading.

We have resized the checkbox for the comment subscription.

  51. DWA responds:

So far so good! I’m still not getting video; and I get it from other sites. But we have a really picky censor here. :-)

  52. robbo responds:

Looking super-sassy in Firefox 2 today!

  53. YourPTR! responds:

The new design is quite nice. Indeed there are lots of improvements and it’s a much better design overall but I still much prefer the old site’s header.

  54. Rufus_Lima responds:

Hey, Nice new look of Cryptomundo…

  55. LeCope responds:

The site still isn’t working properly in Safari. As Darkstream mentioned Safari on a Mac is typically a very stable and compliant browser. In fact, this site is one of very few that I have ever visited that didn’t work in Safari…Curious.

  56. greywolf responds:

The site is great but the use of light green print is not good. Stay with black or at least a darker color.

  57. Mnynames responds:

I agree with Mystery Man about being able to jump pages…

  58. DWA responds:

And I have to say this.

I seem to be getting prompted to log in, rather than just getting the comment screen, much more often.

Which has prompted me, finally, to use a password I can REMEMBER. :-D

  59. mystery_man responds:

I still don’t know what is up with the complaints I have heard about Safari. I am using Safari too and it works perfectly. Are you sure the problem is with Safari? I honestly have not had any problems running this site in it. Odd.

  60. LeCope responds:

That is Odd Mystery Man…Such an oddity has made me check it on my other Mac where it worked fine on Safari 2.0 running on a screaming G5 with OS 10.4.1, I am currently updating Safari on my other machine, (Internet machine) a G4 running OS 10.3.9…I will tell you momentarily if this works…

  61. LeCope responds:

Ok…it works in Safari 1.3.1 So, I think you might need to upgrade your Safari Darkstream.

  62. mystery_man responds:

LeCope, good to hear! I was starting to wonder if my Mac had some kind of special touch! That explains it then. I am running a new version of Safari on a G5 with the latest OS version. I kind of thought it was probably that you guys were running an older version or something. Glad to see you got the problem fixed!
