My first recollection of anything of the nature was from a FOAF report in the Southwest, and the animal being blamed for sheep mutilations was a giant iguana type (or "Small dinosaur/Mini-rex"): I reported this to the SITU in the '70's, shortly after joining. I have heard of the Iguana Chupas later--personally I think that's where the back spines came from--but other Chupas include anything from mangy dogs to giant Vampire bats.
