However, even if we accept her time and date for the photograph her story totally unravels.
Sunlight shadows reveal she must have been facing east not west when she snapped her photo. And given her type of camera, the distance to the far shore was no gtreater than 350 yards. In northern Lake Champlain, the only place that matches is parked beside Abnaki Road on North Hero Island while looking across Hibbard Bay… no where near where Mansi claimed.

My personal opinion is that her photo and subsequent story were all a “tall tale” run amuk.

However, I also take into account what she said about what she saw: that it was a head coming up out of the water. I don’t remember the exact words and I don’t have it at my fingertips, but I also believe she stated that she saw the water rolling down and out of its mouth.

I consider the Mansi encounter as genuine.

I know this may sound a bit prosaic but the Mansi photo has always reminded me of a shot of someone swimming with their right arm raised to take the next stroke – especially when their hand is cupped with fingers held together, as I was taught to swim. The upper arm is foreshortend by perspective and most people actually don’t kick their feet when they’re just swimming for fun. So far I haven’t heard this as a possible explanation.

I agree the photo is genuine, the story is a bit foggy…

It’s not the foreground, but rather the background that is most significant in the Mansi photograph. Given her story, that photograph could not possibly have been taken anywhere near she claims to have been on Lake Champlain.

The photograph may well be genuine, but her story is bogus.

@ gorilin – It can’t be the end of the discussion because the picture – and the video you linked – isn’t clear. I can see how it looks like a head on a neck and a body. But the resolution is simply too low to definitely say what it is.

Another problem I see is at the base of the neck on the left side of the image (in the link) there is small thing sticking up that is also cylindrical in shape and rising up from the base of the neck. What part of an evolved plesiosaur (or any creature) would that be?

The picture is certainly intriguing, and important to the world of cryptozoology, but it could just as easily show drift wood as a creature. Like the P&G film, it is very good, some of the best media we have of what might be cryptids, but it is very difficult to say (definitively) what we are truly seeing.

Bloodletting with the teeth of the Chaousarou is good for getting rid of a headache. Sometimes I use Tylenol too.

When Champlain described this creature, he was definitely describing a big gar. Back then alligator gar territory reached from Florida to Canada, almost the entire US and the things grew to be upwards of 14ft foot long. We can thank our human counter parts for killing most them off out of ignorant fear and persecution. Whether champ is a gar or something else I don’t know but what was described by Champlain was a gar. Probably an alligator gar. Nothing in his description points to anything else.
