Sigh.

Never shoot at anything unless you know what it is.

That is so basic a gun safety rule. Never put yourself in a situation where you have to say, "I shot at something, but I don't know what it was. I think I may have hit it."

How credible is someone who will give a statement like that?

If you don't know what something is, how do you know it is OK to shoot it?

In North America we have a lot of different ways a Panther (or jaguar or cougar) could get here. Most common would be an escaped exotic pet but it isn't outside the realm of possibility for several animals to migrate, over time, from the South. (granted it would take a lot of effort and luck) but with the global climate changes occurring AND the loss of many apex predators in North America it isn't as outlandish as one might think.

As for big cats in the UK, a large island, that is a lot harder to account for. They would almost have to be escaped exotics but there are so many reports of these animals anymore that either the few that could be escapees get around a LOT or there is a growing, breeding population. Either that or people are getting more and more confused over wildlife (the easy explanation) or we are seeing animals filling an open niche and that is going to continue unless someone gets trigger happy and decides to kill them off again.
