It looks to me like the bird and hand are photo-shopped over the background landscape. It just doesn’t look right to me. Man, I hope this isn’t fake! What an absolutely beautiful bird!

It could be a built in camera flash making the image look suspicious. Boy, but that hand does look like a cut and paste job too me. The shadows just aren’t right. Let’s hope that this is a legit picture.

The caught woodpecker looks pretty good to me – head’s ruffled up, but if you’ve ever watched bird banding operations, birds fly into the mist net head first, and are put into a collection bag head first. That tends to ruffle up a bird’s head. The rest of the bird’s plumage looks pretty good.

Absolutely incredible! What a beautiful bird. This of course stirs up more hope within me that the IBW will be confirmed to still be alive here in North America. Great to hear about the South American re-discoveries.
