I am having difficulty posting to the comments form. Anyone else? It is saying I was "Posting Comments Too Quickly Slow Down," even though I know I wasn't!

I suppose I shouldn't tangle with someone calling themselves "Jayman" when discussing blue jays and blue pheasants, but here goes anyway. :-)

Isn't saying that "birds are not 'really' blue" like saying that the atmosphere and/or outer space is not blue but takes on the appearance of a deep blue surface because of the air's scattering of sunlight?

After all, aren't we talking about how the bird's color is "experienced" by humans and if humans are seeing "blue birds"? Don't we have to start there and deal with that?

It is probably true in a sense that these birds are not "really" blue. The Blue Jay isn't, either - its feather pigment is brown, the blue color has to do with how the feathers scatter light. I think this is true of most, maybe all, blue birds.
