The problem I have with using the name Gigantopithecus, is the the creature now alive would not still be of this 500,000 year old species. It is something new. It would be like modern humans calling themselves Homo Erectus, the human type that coexisted with Giganto.

I propose the Latin Borealopithecus
a) Pattersoni,
b) Kranztensi, or
c) Americanus.

Pick one. That would translate as Patterson's (or Krantz's or American) Northern ape. I think "northern" is appropriate because it is a northern ape species. Asian unclassified primates probably, by this time, represent different species from Sasquatch.

Would that mean that the yowie would be Gigantopithecus Australis? Or Paranthropus Australis? *confused*

Whatever genus name the sasquatch ends up with, I've long thought that the species or subspecies name should honor Dr. Krantz.

If the orang pendek turns out, as would be my guess, to be a form of gibbon with such distinct characteristics as erect gait and shortened arms, then Hylobates erectus seems appropriate.

A MORE LIKELY NAME

Given the current climate, where staged marketing of related merchandise seems to be acquiring priority over comprehensive and scientific presentation of the actual thesis, we'll be lucky if Bigfoot doesn't end up being called GIGANTOPITHECUS COCA COLUS.
