No baby Bigfoot, say Malaysian officials

Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian wildlife officials denied capturing a baby “Bigfoot” Thursday, amid fevered speculation over the existence of the mythical creature in the nation’s southern jungles.

The Berita Harian newspaper reported that a young Bigfoot was caught by a group of men thought to be from the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) near the southern town of Kota Tinggi two weeks ago.

The paper quoted local residents as saying they had spoken to men who described shooting the creature with tranquiliser darts. The locals then peeked into the back of the their truck to see a large, hairy creature.

But the department’s director-general Datuk Musa Nordin denied the report.

“During the period reported, Perhilitan did not mount any operation in the area,” Musa said in a statement carried by the official Bernama news agency.

Freddie Long, the Tourism and Environment Committee chairperson in southern Johor state, said that if a Bigfoot had been captured, it should have been given to local authorities for research.

Bigfoot fever erupted last December when some workers claimed to have spotted three of the beasts, two adults and a youngster, on the edge of a Johor forest reserve.

The tale was given wide coverage in the national press which also carried stories of other sightings, some dating back decades, and printed photographs of supposed footprints - vague impressions in the jungle floor.

Local authorities treated the claims seriously, with plans for an official expedition to track down the mysterious beasts, and setting up a telephone hotline to report sightings.

Suggestions that the story has been cooked up to lure tourists to Johor have been denied.

Stories of mythical ape-like creatures have been reported in wilderness areas all over the world. They are known as Bigfoot or Sasquatch in the United States and Canada, and yetis in the Himalayas.

This incident has all the makings of a Malaysian Roswell. First they did, then they didn’t. I personally am going to give this story some more time to pan out before casting final judgement. The potential magnitude of this type of discovery carries a great deal of global capital. It would be rash for a country like Malaysia to squander such a find on speculative press coverage.

I agree. Sounds like a future made for T.V. movie. I’ll keep my eyes and ears open before jumping to conclusions.

  3. RocketSeason responds:

A baby bigfoot could be just a regular ‘ol monkey.

Some joke gets written down, someone mis-interprets something, etc. suddenly we have a bigfoot.

If locals accually did see a hairy creature in the back of the truck, It could have just been a monkey. Who really knows.

But thats just the skeptic in me talking.

  4. pandafarmer responds:

yeah i’m guessing it turned out to be a monkey or some kind of bear-type creature.

  5. Mnynames responds:

I’m kinda with you there on this one. However, if the government was worried about this bigfoot thing getting out of hand, maybe they might send somebody in to have a look. Now, if that someone managed to see and capture something, well, would they reveal it to the world, or would they quietly remove it so that things could get back to normal? Perhaps unlikely, and like I said, I’m with you on this one, but it is plausible…

  6. Robsquatch responds:

It looks to me like the Government wanted total control and unfettered access to any live specimen, for their own purposes and profit. As you can see they strictly wanted to keep it in their own country. What I think happened is, a bunch of government wildlife workers who get paid $2.00 per hour caught and have in their possession the worlds biggest find in paleontology today. Rather than turn it in, and get no reward other than their measly low paying job gives them they smuggled it out of the country to locate the highest bidder who will come forward. I know if I were dirt poor and making a puny wage, and had in my possession a multi-million dollar find I would do what is best for my family, and not what’s in the interest of the government, and local Universities.
Lets just be patient, I think this creature will turn up very soon. Unless the Roman Catholic Church steps in and buys the creature so they can quietly squash this rumor and dispose of any evidence that might cause ripples in their totalitarian regime.

  7. cor2879 responds:

I still don’t understand what any government would have to gain from covering up the discovery of a bigfoot-like creature. I’m sure this has been discussed in detail before but I just don’t see it.
