I really wonder how many new species of birds are out there? Because I see many different kinds of birds in my area that I have never seen before.

This just shows a classic example of how many new species are awaiting discovery in dusty museum storage areas.

A classic example of this in the cryptozoological field was the discovery of the Kawekaweau, a 2 foot gecko species from New Zealand found in a dusty storage area of the Marcelle Museum in France in 1986.

A totally new large species of gecko only known from the type specimen, presumed to be extinct, but after the discovery reports of sightings and colonies of these lizards began to come to light.

How many other crypto zoological mysteries have important clues waiting in the draw of some museum where they may be forgotten in the mists of time.

How many new species await the be identified in the drawers of museums? It's a matter of cost, a DNA analysis project paid by museum donations can lead the way, or individuals who foot the bill can have the honor of choosing the Latin name.
