With all of the giant squid popping up these days, I am starting to lose hope that the giant octopus is still about.
One would think the same deep sea pressures driving Architeuthis up from the deep would also play a similar tune for Octopus Giganticus.

Springheeledjack and Ceroill, each of you could be right. I think, obviously, with all the fishing, pollution, global warming and man made problems, anything is possible. They could have a predator that we do not know about that may be forcing them to the surface. Could be lack of food. Hopefully we can find out and protect this marvelous enigmatic species. Who knows what lurks in the dark depths of the ocean? Take care fellas.

Springheeledjack: I suspect it has something to with deep ocean currents being affected more than we realize, driving these animals into higher waters in search of viable food sources.

This begs the question I think...is it just coincidence that we are now beginning to come across and capture these critters???

It's the fourth specimen, but the 4th in a short amount of time...

Does that mean people's methods are getting better? Is something driving them to the surface more often? Something else?

Good News!! It is always a treat to get to see these elusive creatures, can't wait until we see a truly giant specimen in its natural habitat, when technology allows us to go that deep of course:)
