I've worked with big cats over thirty years. There is nothing mysterious about these incidents. They are the result of unqualified people being put in positions of responsibility, unsupervised. Big cats are lethal predators and opportunists. If the opportunity arises for lion or tiger to behave in a way which nature dictates, there is a 50/50 chance he/she will grab the opportunity. It is always the human who is in error should an accident occur regardless of circumstance- the human chooses to put him/herself in close proximity to these powerful creatures. The risk and danger is very real. If an ignorant supervisor has not given adequate instruction to an individual, and if a naive employee has not put forth the time and effort to educate themselves and learn about big cats, accidents will happen. It's that simple. No mumbo jumbo involved. Having animals in captivity is completely acceptable providing they are well cared for and have experienced, responsible people looking after them.
