Remembering Andrewsarchus

Posted by: Loren Coleman on July 12th, 2009

Andrewsarchus for the 12th? What is Loren talking about?

Even a hard-working cryptozoologist needs to take a break for his birthday weekend, correct?

Here are some snapshots from the July 12th celebration in 2007, at the Portland Sea Dogs game:

Loren's CryptoZoo Birthday

During the event, an unknown cryptid mascot showed up to pose with the specially made Bigfoot birthday cake and some guy in a red shirt (versus the usual blue or black shirts). Actually, the creature is the Yarmouth Clam Festival mascot clam. Strange but very cheerful.

Loren's CryptoZoo Birthday

My party favor given to all who attended that party ~ even if they didn’t want it ~ ha ~ was a copy of Tom Slick: True Life Encounters in Cryptozoology, soon to be a major motion picture ~ with heavy doses of wishful thinking, knocking on wood, fingers crossed, and patience for another seven years, no doubt :-).

Finally, the Portland Sea Dog mascot appeared for a photo op, but demonstrated the perturbed side of itself, as per usual.

Weirdly, as this picture was being taken, a man walked by in the background, in apparent coincidential imitation of the Bigfoot in the Patterson-Gimlin film. Of course, none of us saw this happen at the time, but there it is. It was similar to what happens out there in the cryptoworld. Either you don’t have a camera when the cryptid stops by, or if you do and take a photo, you don’t really realize all that you’ve captured on film.

The names of the real guests and their images will not be shown here to protect the innocent. However, my sincere thanks to all who came in 2007, making it a wonderful and fun night.

See you all and more in 2017, for in 2009, I’m going to have a quieter, more reflective day.

One gift that has come in for 2009 is the Bullyland Andrewsarchus, which thus nearly completes my collection of these mammals. It is pictured in the top left hand corner on the “mountain” below, and at the top, the long animal in the foreground.

Andrewsarchus was, conservatively, 11 feet long from snout to the back without the tail, but 13-18 feet in some estimates and 6 feet tall at the shoulders. It is the world’s largest mammalian carnivore to have ever lived. It was a basal, heavily-built, wolf-like mammal that lived during the Eocene epoch, roughly between 45 and 36 million years ago. It walked on four short legs and had a long body, a long tail, and may have had feet with hoofed toes. It is only known from one skull and a few bones.

Besides the fact it is an intriguing and attractive replica of an extinct mammal, another reason I like this piece is that the Andrewsarchus is named for the famous explorer, fossil hunter, and cryptozoologist Roy Chapman Andrews. (For one cryptolink, see Chad Arment’s excellent edition of Harry R. Caldwell’s Blue Tiger, which has an additional appendix, where Roy Chapman Andrews describes his point-of-view of the search for the cryptid melanistic feline.)

Andrewsarchus was discovered in June 1923 by Kan Chuen Pao, a member of Andrews’ expedition, on a site in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia known as Irdin Mahna (”Jeweled Mandala”) on the third Asiatic expedition that was led by Andrews and sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History. In 1922, Andrew’s party had discovered a fossil of Indricotherium (then named Baluchitherium), a gigantic hornless rhinoceros.

I still remain in search of a replica of the Deinotherium and the “display mountain” for my Bullyland “prehistoric mammals” collection. As you can see at the top, Darren Naish has this relative of the elephant in his gathering of replicas.

Deinotherium from Bullyland (easier to obtain outside America, in Germany).

Happy Birthday Loren. Your B-day is one day before my Lil’ Bigfoot collaborator’s, Phillip Pittz! And two days before another guy I’m currently collaborating on a book with!! So I better look closer at these days in July. There must be some special meaning there. Enjoy!

Happy b day loran hope it was good!

  16. JMonkey responds:

Happy Birthday. I hope you find even more in this year to fullfill your dreams. I do have one complaint. As a bigfoot enthusiast, I find that the pictures of the elusive Lorne Coleman, are much too in focus to be the “real” thing. Just kidding. Have a great birthday. Oh and the Patterson Grimlin guy in the background is great. You could not have done better if you had staged it.

  17. CryptoInformant 2.0 responds:

The 12th? Either it’s yet another cryptozoological coincidence, or you stole my birthday, Loren. :D

(As for myself, I got a watermelon and a poundcake, and swam in waters known to be inhabited by particularly large specimens of the prehistoric-looking Alligator Gar. Not sure who had the more interesting day…)

  18. Bast responds:

Happy Belated Birthday, Loren. I’ve just sent through another small donation, well wishes here.
