Year of the Yeti Begins Now!

Sanderson Abominable Snowman

This Friday will be the official launch of the new publication of the reasonably-priced hardback edition of Ivan T. Sanderson’s classic book, Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life, from Cosimo Classics. This new printing contains a new preface I’ve written, and I will have a few copies, hot off the press, literally, for sale at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City.

I also will have copies of two other books I’ve written that contain large sections about the Yeti: Tom Slick: True Life Encounters in Cryptozoology and The Field Guide to Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates Worldwide to sell and autograph.

(If you can’t make it to the New York event, but want your own personalized autographed copy of the new ABSM book or any of the others, please email me directly at lcoleman@maine.rr.com )

The Rubin Museum of Art – the museum of Himalayan art in New York - has asked me to introduce the 1957 classic film The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas on Friday, January 4, 2008, at 9:30 p.m. I will be doing the book signing before opening the film.

If you have seen the film, you will recall that the movie’s Yeti displays an uncanny extraspecial ability for telepathy.

    That’s very cool, Loren!

Always nice to see a classic like this volume still in print.

Living now in Santa Fe, New Mexico (after living 20 years in New York City), I will sadly not be able to make the trip.

But thanks, Loren, for helping to oversee this reprint. Long ago I lent my first edition copy to someone, and it has never returned. Now I’ll be able to replace it! (And it was the contents, not the fact that it was a first edition, that I lamented losing).

I love that movie as well, which I think an intelligent and very wise film indeed. No sensationalism or cheap scares. Instead, a highly engrossing depiction of how the ABSM phenomenon (and perhaps by extension, other, similar crypto-phenomena [bigfoot, for example]) psychologically affects the human imagination.

Great. I shall probably be getting this new re-print at some stage. As for the movie, I love it. You can’t beat those old 1950s and 1960s Hammer productions.

THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN OF THE HIMALAYAS is my personal favorite of all the Sasquatch/Yeti films.

i especially love the screenplay, which is very taut and was written by Nigel Kneale, who also scripted the cult favorite Prof. Quatermass series (FIVE MILLION YEARS TO EARTH, et al).

only wished the Alamo Drafthouse here in Austin would have you next, Loren! ;)
